After years of eager anticipation, fans got a first look at Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm’s newest, R-rated, animated Batman project, Batman: Caped Crusader, which debuted a gritty first trailer.
Welcome to Gotham City, overrun by villains and corrupt politicians. The trailer brought back familiar faces as well as some surprise additions like Two-Face, The Penguin, and Onomatopeia, as Batman takes on darker forces threatening the city. There are explosions galore, and this time, the GCPD plays a bigger role in attempting to stop Batman.
Here’s the show’s synopsis:
Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human — the Batman. His one-man crusade attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications.
Batman comic book writer Ed Brubaker also said that the series would see Batman “murdering people up”, with the series having a noir feel and the audience “will also be shocked by some things”, and that Batman: Caped Crusader was “like the show Bruce Timm always wanted to make but that they wouldn’t let him make.”
Helmed by JJ Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Matt Reeves (The Batman), Timm, and Brubaker, Caped Crusader was saved from cancellation after HBO Max originally axed the show, and stars the voice talents of Hamish Linklater (Gen V) as Batman, Diedrich Bader (Harley Quinn) as Harvey Dent, Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets) as Catwoman, and Jamie Chung (Big Hero 6) as Harley Quinn, among other members of the ensemble cast.
Hero or monster to some, Batman becomes something both more and less than human when Batman: Caped Crusader arrives on Amazon Prime Video on 1 August.
