Henry Cavill, known for his iconic roles as Superman and Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher, is set to star in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming live-action Voltron movie, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. This marks another significant addition to Cavill’s expanding portfolio of major action films.
Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who previously helmed Netflix’s Red Notice and Skyscraper, the new Voltron project will bring the classic mecha anime to life. Thurber will also co-write the screenplay with Ellen Shanman, promising a fresh take on the beloved series.
The plot details remain tightly sealed, including the specifics of Cavill’s role. The original Voltron animated series, which debuted in the 1980s, centred around a team of space explorers piloting robotic lions that combine to form the giant robot Voltron. Adapted from the Japanese series Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV, the show was reworked for a Western audience as 1984’s Voltron: Defender of the Universe.
Joining Cavill is Daniel Quinn-Toye, a rising star who made a notable impression as Tom Holland’s understudy in a recent West End production of Romeo & Juliet. The involvement of such a promising newcomer alongside Cavill adds excitement to the casting dynamics.
This live-action adaptation represents a new chapter for the Voltron franchise, which has seen several animated iterations and a Netflix reboot titled Voltron: Legendary Defender in 2016. However, this project will be the first to visualise the story in a live-action format.
Beyond Voltron, Cavill has been keeping busy with various projects. After leaving The Witcher, he has been involved in two action films this year — Argylle and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Additionally, Cavill is preparing for a major role in the upcoming Highlander reboot directed by Chad Stahelski, scheduled for release in 2026.
