Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is an upcoming soulslike action role-playing game featuring intense combat utilising a mix of swordplay and magical abilities. The game follows protagonist Wuchang as she unravels the secrets of her past while afflicted by the horrific Feathering disease. The title launches day one with Xbox Game Pass in 2025.

Alan Wake 2: The Lake House DLC

As Agent Estevez, players will return to Cauldron Lake and explore the twisted halls of the Lake House, a mysterious facility set up by the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), and unravel the dark mysteries within in Alan Wake 2’s upcoming expansion, coming 22 October 2024.

FBC: Firebreak

Have you ever played 2019’s Control and thought, “I wish I could play this in first-person and with my friends”? Well, good news folks, FBC: Firebreak is a three-player co-op shooter set within the FBC where players can get up close and personal with the Hiss and pump them full of lead. The game is set to release in 2025.

Cronos: The New Dawn

Coming in 2025, Cronos: The New Dawn is an upcoming combat-driven third-person survival horror game by Bloober Team, the minds behind Layers of Fear, The Medium and Blair Witch.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

The latest trailer for Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii shows off more of the game’s bombastic combat, alongside a first look at its naval battles, which evokes the same feeling as those seen in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The game launches on 21 February 2025.

Mouse: P.I. For Hire

For anyone who loves classic cartoons but wishes they were a little less kid-friendly, Mouse: P.I. For Hire will scratch that itch in 2025 with a gritty, noir-fuelling first-person shooter, presented in black-and-white for that extra nostalgia kick.

Subnautica 2

Dive into the deep and face the alien horrors lurking below in Subnautica 2, the highly-anticipated sequel to Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, coming 2025.

Wheel World

Deck out your bike and hit the road in Wheel World in early 2025, a semi-open world biking title featuring a cell-shaded art style reminiscent of 2021’s indie hit, Sable.

The Legend of Baboo

Coming 2025, The Legend of Baboo follows Sepehr and his loyal dog Baboo as they embark on a journey through magical lands to rescue their family from a dark and ancient evil. But here’s the more important question: will we be able to pet the dog?

Phasmophobia Xbox Release

AI magic doesn't automatically make an upgrade worthwhile.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to occupy the tech space, wireless earbuds are no less susceptible to its influence. The Google Pixel Buds Pro 2, running on the tagline “AI-powered with comfortable fit”, has incorporated the tech into its formula, allowing the company to lay claim to its first pair of earbuds powered by a Tensor chip.

Typically found in the Pixel series of smartphones, the processor offers various performance enhancements and support for Google AI. Similarly, the Tensor A1 audio chip also taps into the software to process audio 90 times faster than the speed of sound, with an upgraded active noise cancellation (ANC) infrastructure blocking out twice as much noise as before.

Other noteworthy improvements to optimise the overall experience include large 11mm drivers for powerful bass and spatial audio with head-tracking functionality to deliver immersive surround sound. Expect Gemini, Google’s voice assistant, to work like a charm with the earbuds, which offer seamless integration across existing Pixel devices.

Suffice to say, it’s no slouch. Packed to the brim with AI oomph, the accessory offers a glimpse of next-gen capabilities, but where does it stand among its contemporaries? Check out its performance in the comparison video above, featuring the Apple AirPods Pro Gen 2, Nothing Ear, and Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro.

The Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 retails for S$349 and will be available in Porcelain, Hazel, Wintergreen, and Peony.

Every year at Adobe MAX, one of the main highlights apart from the day 2 inspiration keynote with guest creators, is always the “MAX Sneaks”, where Adobe’s engineers and research scientists showcase a slew of cutting-edge innovations that may or may not eventually come to Adobe’s Creative Cloud apps. This year at Adobe MAX 2024 in Miami, the “Sneaks” was co-hosted by award-winning actress Awkwafina.

Here are the 9 latest early-stage innovations and exciting advancements across photography, video, audio, 3D and design shared during this year’s MAX Sneaks:

Project Perfect Blend makes it easier to add people or objects into another image while automatically adjusting colour, lighting, and shadows to naturally blend it with the image.

Project Clean Machine removes unwanted flashes from things like photo flashes or fireworks, as well as objects briefly blocking the camera. These distractions can easily be removed from photos or videos with just a click of a button.

Project In Motion uses generative AI to turn a custom shape animation into a video just by describing what you want. It uses generative AI to convert text into animation based on an initial After Effects project. You can even add a style reference image to mix and match styles with your prompt for a unique touch.

Project Know How envisions the future of content provenance by demonstrating the durability of Content Credentials across both digital and physical spaces. Through fingerprinting and watermarking, users can quickly trace the origins of videos and images to their original source, even when visible Content Credentials metadata has been stripped.

Project Turntable enables you to easily rotate 2D vector art in 3D, and it will still look like 2D art from any new angle. Simply click a button and drag a slider to spin your graphics around, much like manipulating a 3D object.

Project Super Sonic allows you to generate sound effects for your video simply by using a prompt. You can even control the timing of these sounds with your voice, or layer sounds directly in the timeline, mix background and foreground effects, and choose from variations of prompts to get just the right sound.

Project Scenic makes 2D image creation easier by letting you build a 3D scene layout with a copilot prompt.

Project Remix A Lot makes it super easy to turn a sketch into a polished design but starting with a rough idea and then refine it using an inspiration image. The tool uses generative AI to guide you through the creative process, letting you adjust your design to fit various shapes and sizes, even irregular ones.

Project Hi-Fi can capture any part of your screen and use it as a guide to quickly create high-quality images with AI. These images can then be easily brought into Adobe Photoshop for further editing.

Ending off the “Sneaks” session was a surprise announcement that the next Adobe MAX would be held in Tokyo, Japan on 13 February 2025.

TGS 2024 Was A Hectic, Eye-Opening Learning Experience For This Noob Lifelong Gamer https://geekculture.co/tgs-2024-was-a-hectic-eye-opening-learning-experience-for-this-noob-lifelong-gamer/ Tue, 15 Oct 2024 07:41:23 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=304171

The gaming convention experience as seen from the eyes of a newbie.

The post TGS 2024 Was A Hectic, Eye-Opening Learning Experience For This Noob Lifelong Gamer appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

Imagine being 28 years old and playing video games for the better part of 16 years. Then you find yourself at a new job covering video games, among other things, in early September, and on the first day of work, you’re told that the company is sending you to TGS that very same month.

That’s Tokyo Game Show, the annual video game convention held annually in Tokyo, Japan. Yes, Japan – home of Nintendo, Bandai Namco, Square Enix, Sony, PlayStation, and Sega – and if you are a gamer, you’ll understand it when they say there is no video games culture without Japan, and TGS is the mecca that all gamers yearn to experience.

So, long-time gamer, a new job, and an all-expense ticket to the ultimate video game convention, complete with full media credentials – that’s like winning the lottery and meeting the girl of your dreams that same week. Sure, there have been visits to local game events in Singapore, from GameStart Asia to the upcoming Gamescom Asia… but that’s like replacing an A5 Miyazaki Wagyu steak with one from the neighbourhood Char Grill Bar – it’s similar but definitely not the same. And there’s no way those events can be compared to TGS, and going in with little idea of what to expect (I was a first-timer, after all), what eventually awaited me was both incredible and intimidating at the same time.

So strap in, and let me take you on a virgin TGS 2024 experience for those who are preparing for that eventual trip, and for those who realise they’ll never make it there. Never say never because you never know if the things learned along the way on this inaugural trip can help any of you potential convention attendees out there looking to make full use of your first foray into the world of gaming cons.

Day one of the convention was as hectic as it was exciting, and the first thing you learn is that TGS isn’t technically in Tokyo. The global gaming event is held at Makuhari Messe, a massive convention centre in Chiba City, just outside of Tokyo (Yeah, CGS doesn’t have that nice of a ring to it), which meant it took more than an hour by train to get there from our hotel in Shinjuku. Along the way, the sight of fellow attendees on the packed train, some in cosplay outfits, should have provided indicators of how crowded the convention space would be, but it never prepared me for just how crowded it got.

Upon exiting the station, that’s when realization, along with a massive daisy chain of people shuffling their way towards a building in the distance, set in. It was only when the crowd moved closer that the scale of the event truly hit me. TGS is spread across 11 halls and 2 separate buildings, requiring a rather substantial walk in between. Was there even enough time to make it through everything?

The exterior of the convention centre was plastered with huge posters of upcoming games, including Doom: The Dark Ages and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Here’s a fun fact—Bethesda, one of the world’s biggest game developers and publisher of both games, isn’t even at TGS and had only bought up all the ad space outside, which is something they apparently do every year.

Once inside, and after receiving the coveted media pass, it was onwards to the halls, via the VIP media entrance, no less. Almost immediately, the chatter in the halls and all sorts of noises coming from the various booths started to overwhelm, but in a bizarre way. You start hearing familiar music overlapping one another, and while you might not be able to put your finger on it, your brain registers a level of familiarity.

In most instances, you’ll never know where the music or sound comes from but sometimes, you’ll hear the distinctive “!” sound from the Metal Gear series and upon looking up, you see the massive Konami booth at the opposite end of the hall, and catch sight of the giant LED screen playing promotional videos for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

Alas, the iconic sound attracted almost everyone else as well, as we all made a beeline towards the booth only to realise that a substantial queue had already formed for the much-anticipated demo. And therein lies my first TGS mistake of constantly returning in the hopes of seeing a shorter queue, instead of prioritising exploring everything else TGS had to offer.

And offer it did. Every booth at the show had some form of centrepiece to draw attention. Giant statues were the most common sights, from Bandai Namco’s giant Goku statue to Square Enix’s massive ceiling-mounted Slime. Some booths even had live shows playing, like the one at SEGA / ATLUS, which featured a live-action performance reenacting cutscenes from role-playing game, Metaphor: ReFantazio.

So what do all these booths and events have in common? My first learning point.

Prepare For Leg Day

Be prepared to walk, or at least spend prolonged hours on your feet. Once inside the various halls, you’ll realise that there are no seating areas whatsoever, and between exploring the various booths or waiting in line for game demos, you are going to be spending most of your time on your feet. To prepare accordingly, wear comfortable shoes and thick socks to prevent abrasions and blisters.

There are seating areas in the corridors outside the convention halls, but due to its layout, constantly walking in and out of the hall can be time-consuming. There are specific exit and entrance points for attendees, and these are situated on opposite ends of the building. Very much like how most shopping centres work, this means that you have to walk almost the entire stretch of the halls just to exit, and vice versa, so it makes much more sense to stay within the confines of the hall, to save both time and energy.

After exploring the halls and figuring out which game demos I wanted to try out, I made the (bad) decision to return to where it all started, Konami. Instead of the shortened queue I had previously hoped for, the crowd had ballooned to an almost impressive amount (it would turn out to be the largest crowd I encountered throughout the experience).

As I really wanted to try out the demo for Metal Gear Solid, I reluctantly joined the seemingly never-ending queue, only to be met with learning point number two.

The Importance of Translation Apps

Language barrier is a big issue in Japan, with a majority of the folks at the event unable to speak conversational English. The evolution of TGS to cater to a global audience means that by this time, every game booth should have at least one English-speaking staff member, but to avoid the awkward situation of staff frantically scrambling to find that one person who can understand you, it’s probably best to use translation apps to help you in a pinch.

Here’s the thing, don’t even bother with any fancy voice-to-text translation software you might have because the crowd at the convention halls are loud, and these apps will simply fail to pick up your voice amidst the chatter that constantly fills the hall. Stick with the manual way, and type out your queries.

Conversely, camera translation apps such as Google Lens are a godsend. Game booths prominently feature signs (which are entirely in Japanese) detailing important information such as queue times or availability, and having an app to translate them can help avoid disappointment. Taking my experience waiting in line for Metal Gear Solid’s demo as an example, it turned out demand was much higher than expected, resorting to them handing out tickets on a first-come-first-serve basis, subsequently only allowing ticket holders to try out the game’s demo. This was what caused the massive lines I was unfortunately right in the middle of.

Unbeknownst to me, the ticketing period was already closed, and staff members were holding up signs conveying this information. I wasn’t aware of this fact and continued waiting until my stupidity was conveyed to me via a Google-translated conversation with staff. Translating the sign beforehand would have prevented my ensuing disappointment, and saved precious time to try out other games.

After the whole Metal Gear mishap, I moved on to check out other titles, but at this point, there were long queues at practically every booth, and with the convention’s closing hour looming ever closer, I decided to spend the rest of my time doing a little bit of recon.

Formulate A Game Plan On Day 1

With so many booths to explore, demos to try out, and so little time, I realised it was essential to have a plan of action beforehand, to make full use of the time available. TGS 2024’s operating hours were from 10 am to 5 pm, which didn’t leave enough time to fully experience everything it had to offer. Making the decision to spend day 1 exploring in preparation for day 2 ended up being the right move, as it gave me the leeway to immerse myself in the atmosphere of TGS. Booths came in all shapes and sizes, some tucked away in corners or less travelled locations, so it became sort of an adventure navigating the various nooks and crannies trying to find a hidden gem.

And it paid off, oh it really did. Near closing time, I was wandering around aimlessly getting ready to leave, when I chanced upon a familiar sight in the corner of my eye. It was the silhouette of a character I recognised from a trailer viewed a few months prior – Phantom Blade Zero

Needless to say, Phantom Blade Zero skyrocketed to the top of my “to-try” list for day 2. This really goes to show that no matter how hard you try to plan, a gaming convention as large as TGS will always find ways to surprise you. Having a game plan is important but always keep an open mind and explore. Who knows, you just might chance upon something that surprises you. Like a phantom.

Prioritise Demos On Day 2

Now armed with a clear game plan, I headed into day 2 as a man on a mission, making it a point to reach just as the convention hall doors opened at 10 am. Once in, I immediately made my way to Phantom Blade Zero and was one of the first in line. Needless to say, the demo did not disappoint, and honestly, I’m still thinking about the roughly 10 minutes I spent with it, and you can share in that experience with my preview here.

Second on my agenda was Dynasty Warriors: Origins, one of the few games that shaped my gamer life. And here I was, and words can’t describe the feeling of playing the demo, and getting to experience the next evolution of my favourite game franchise ahead of everyone else.

Next, I headed to the booth for The First Berserker: Khazan, a title I had no prior knowledge of, but I was lured to due to a massive LED screen that surrounded the entire booth. Like most other booths, this one had a rather long queue, but I had an ace up my sleeve – my media pass. One flash of my pass and I was brought to a separate counter, and one exchange of information later, I had secured a demo slot exclusively for me. Media privileges sure felt good.

One thing to note though, tailor your expectations regarding the game demos. Most of them last only 15 minutes each (with a select few being up to 30 minutes), so prepare to spend more time queuing for the demo than actually playing it. Here’s a pro tip – prioritise queues with 10 or so people versus empty ones. Game demos operate in batches, and an empty queue signifies that the previous batch has just gone in, requiring a wait time equivalent to the demo’s entire duration. Joining a line of people might seem counterproductive, but the chances of the ongoing demo reaching its end is much higher, leading to shorter wait times.

The First Berserker: Khazan marked the last of my planned titles to try, and I used the remaining time left trying demos that had shorter queues (like Dragon Age: The Veilguard), and also exploring the merchandise shop, where I acquired Silent Hill and Fallout themed pins to deck out my backpack. As just like that, two days flew by, and I was left with an experience I would never forget.

Overall, the entire game convention experience, especially for a newcomer, can be wrapped up with a single word – overwhelming. From the crowds to the sights and sounds, prepare for a literal assault to all your senses, and that’s okay, I’ve learnt that it’s all part of the experience. It can all be quite stressful for first-timers, but with proper planning and focus, your first gaming convention can be both an exciting and fulfilling adventure.

My closing advice for all you potential convention goers? Start small. Gamescom Asia 2024, held in Singapore from 18 to 20 October, might be your best bet. Baby steps people, you’ve got this.

Created by the illustrious Akira Toriyama in 1984, the Dragon Ball franchise has come a long way from its humble beginnings. The beloved franchise is now a household name, spawning all sorts of media from anime films to video games, both with its fair share of ups and downs.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO marks the latest addition to the latter, delivering a flashy action romp that pits iconic characters from the series against each other. For fans, its return bears even more significance — it’s the first Budokai Tenkaichi title in more than 10 years, bringing anticipation to a fever pitch.

The Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO Premium Collector’s Edition feeds further into the hype with a glorious showpiece. Coming in at S$289.90, it bundles both physical and digital goodies, including a 264 x 174 mm diorama depicting a face-off between Ultra Instinct Goku and Legendary Super Saiyan Broly.

Here’s what to expect in the Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO Premium Collector’s Edition:

 • Physical PS5 copy of the Ultimate Edition (including pre-order bonuses)
 • 264 x 174 mm exclusive diorama
 • A SteelBook
 • A double-sided metallic bookmark
 • 4x Dragon Ball Super Card Game: Fusion World cards (including 3 playable cards and 1 Energy Marker card)

The impressive diorama is certainly the standout among the bunch, featuring intricate details from the characters’ facial expressions to the fur texture on Broly’s waist and even the veins in their arms. The game’s logo also blends seamlessly into the rocky base, a nice touch that doesn’t take attention away from two fighters.

Simple assembly is required, with the diorama coming in five pieces — the two fighters, each attached to a terrain piece, and an additional connecting piece. The three pieces slide together to form a cohesive singular base, but the loose fit means there’s some flexibility when displaying the diorama.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO launches on 11 October 2024 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC via Steam.

TGS 2024 – ‘Dynasty Warriors: Origins’ Carves Out Bold Departure From Classic Musou Action – Preview https://geekculture.co/tgs-2024-dynasty-warriors-preview/ Wed, 09 Oct 2024 18:36:21 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=303722

Spicing up the thrills of musou action.

The post TGS 2024 – ‘Dynasty Warriors: Origins’ Carves Out Bold Departure From Classic Musou Action – Preview appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

The 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms has served as one of the most significant influences from Chinese culture, spawning many different reimaginations of its characters and events across various media. In the case of Japanese company Koei Tecmo, it continues to be the muse for its series of turn-based tactical role-playing simulation wargames of the same name, dating back to 1985.

But strategy isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so an alternative adventure took the form of Dynasty Warrior, a spin-off rooted in hack-and-slash action (barring the very first entry in 1997, which is a traditional one-on-one fighting game) that would go on to set the gold standard of the musou genre. As developer Omega Force worked to cement and tweak its identity over the years, some elements have become mainstays – mostly to do with straying from historical records, such as having characters wield anachronistic weapons, the ability to use magic, and turning women with no battle experience into fearsome female warriors.

All of that is set to return in the forthcoming Dynasty Warriors: Origins, the tenth mainline entry sporting a shiny new coat of paint after a seven-year absence. It won’t be the only change either, with a 20-minute demo at Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024 previewing a refreshed formula that introduces several switch-ups, but still retaining a certain sense of familiarity. There are heavy echoes of the flair from Dynasty Warriors 9, doused in meaningful additions, which charts a bold new direction for the series.

The gear-switching is prominent from the get-go, even before the battlefield action even kicks in. Instead of characters hailing from various factions or kingdoms, players step into the role of the Wanderer, an enigmatic, amnesiac hero who rises through the ranks and joins forces with a “long-haired man” and a “bearded hero”. The Create-A-Warrior and Edit Mode feature isn’t carried over here, meaning he’s a default, non-customisable protagonist.

Unlike its predecessors, the game will also significantly reduce the roster. Where the previous mainline entry presented 94 playable characters, Dynasty Warriors: Origins only offers control over nine of them: Xiahou Dun, Guo Jia, and Zhang Liao, led by Cao Cao; Huang Gai, Sun Shangxiang, and Zhou Yu (Sun Jian); and Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Zhao Yun (Liu Bei).

It’s unclear whether the three generals will be playable at any point, but the character trimming process seems intentional to fit into the overall story, spanning the period of the Yellow Turban Rebellion to the Battle of Red Cliffs. Indeed, warfare continues to run deep here, with the demo opening amid the Battle of Sishui Gate, where General Yuan Shao – leading efforts to overthrow Dong Zhuo – lays out the mission to defeat the latter’s officers, Li Jue and Hua Xiong.

Before heading into combat, players can pick their weapon of choice. The General’s Sword, Gnashing Fang, and Crescent Blade were available in the preview, alongside the companion selection of Xiahou Dun, Guan Yu, or Sun Shangxiang, each tied to a different starting point on the map. With the Gnashing Fang in hand and the alliance of Sun Shangxiang, the battlefield welcomed Dong Zhuo’s massive army with open arms.

And boy, was it a breathtaking sight to behold. While swarming forces have always been a series staple, Dynasty Warriors: Origins takes enemy density and environmental detail up a few notches, delivering action set pieces on a formidable, never-before-seen scale. Cinematic quality is crisp, too, with charge scenes showcasing fluid animation and realistic dust effects, and close-up sequences highlighting lively facial expressions.

More impressively, it ran smoothly on the PlayStation 5. Despite the load, there weren’t any noticeable frame rate drops, which fed into highly enjoyable immersion – especially since combat proved to be enthralling. Landing combo chains brought an addictive rush, and alternating between the normal and power attacks (Square and Triangle buttons by default, respectively) came at a comfortable, steady rhythm. Once the special gauge is full, players can trigger Rage mode and unleash four different Battle Arts moves, dealing even more damage to enemies.

It’s a straightforward gameplay loop that will work on common troops, but not for elite units like Li Jue, Guo Si, Jia Xu, and other more formidable commanders. Now protected behind Fortitude, indicated by a glowing shield icon, they require more than just button-mashing to be defeated, as all attacks are rendered less effective in this state. Activating Battle Arts or perfect parries is the most effective way to deplete it, though be careful to still keep your guard up as some attacks launched by certain generals cannot be guarded against, so it all boils down to dodging, blocking, and countering at the right time.

The new system adds tactical depth into the mix, allowing for a more involved and dynamic experience than before. The basic control scheme is also intuitive and easy to pick up, serving as a bonus for newcomers, even if they are likely to feel overwhelmed by the frenetic action. Franchise veterans, meanwhile, may be concerned about the potential issue of cloned skills – a recurring issue that ran its course in Dynasty Warriors 7, 8, and 9, resulting in the loss of individuality as move sets and weapons are shared between characters.

Adding a welcome layer of combat thrill is a fresh mechanic where powerful opponents can challenge the Wanderer to a one-on-one duel. In the preview, Hua Xiong cuts an imposing figure with his mighty axe and hardy armour, dealing massive damage with each successful hit. The general’s attack pattern takes a while getting used to, but his slower and telegraphed movements certainly helps with dodging, parrying, and counter-attacking once players are able to ease into the groove of things. Being surrounded by enemy soldiers means victory feels even more exhilarating and sweet than usual, with the brand-new ration system (up to five in the demo) offering access to consumables.

Once the confrontation was settled, a two-minute timer popped up with a 500-kill objective, which looked like an impossible task. Here’s where the chosen ally got to shine – switching to Shangxiang saw her Musou Ranbu awakening ability devastate the battlefield, eradicating over 1,000 troops in the vicinity. In this mode, the wind-and-fire-wheels wielder can perform tag-team Musou maneuvers with the Wanderer as well, which unlocks a sleek animated sequence.

Brute force isn’t always the way to go, however. The strategic element of Dynasty Warriors: Origins allows players to command up to 21 troopers and fight alongside them, presenting a new spin on the guards system in the series’ earlier works. To facilitate the process of issuing orders like charging or firing arrows, players can call upon the Eyes of the Sacred Bird for an aerial view of the battlefield (think Eagle Vision in the Assassin’s Creed series).

At the end of the road stands the ever-fearsome Lu Bu stands, but alas, time remains a precious commodity. While there wasn’t a chance to cross swords with the strongest general in the Three Kingdoms, the game’s bold tweaks to its classic formula looks to be on the road to redemption following its last middling outing. It holds plenty of optimistic promise, finding strong footing in its combat and cinematic that hopefully, will make the risk worthwhile.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins releases 16 January 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Samsung Showcases Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, The Ultimate Laundry Solution In Bangkok https://geekculture.co/samsung-showcases-bespoke-ai-laundry-combo-the-ultimate-laundry-solution-in-bangkok/ Wed, 09 Oct 2024 08:48:20 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=303633

The future of laundry is here, thanks to AI.

The post Samsung Showcases Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, The Ultimate Laundry Solution In Bangkok appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

There’s a running gag that the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creative endeavours frees us up for household chores, but what we really want is for AI to do our laundry while we write, paint and create. Mankind is probably nowhere near that ideal scenario but global electronics giant Samsung isn’t hanging consumers out to dry.

Samsung Bespoke AI Laundry Combo

The Korean chaebol has unfolded a new generation of laundry care offerings that puts a new spin on the weekly chore, with effortless efficiency and intelligent automation at the forefront, making laundry day a breeze.

Imagine a laundry experience where a machine anticipates your needs, cares for your clothes with personalised attention, and seamlessly integrates with your connected lifestyle. Gone are the days of sorting, soaking, and transferring heavy loads between machines.

Samsung Bespoke AI Laundry Combo (2)

Samsung’s Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, presented at a closed-door forum held in Bangkok, Thailand, boasts the company’s first all-in-one laundry solution, combining a large-capacity washer and a Heatpump Technology dryer in a single, streamlined unit. This 2-in-1 combo isn’t new but it’s the first Samsung combo to utilise Heatpump Technology, which gently dries clothes at lower temperatures, preventing shrinkage while saving time and energy. This translates to drying times that are up to 60% faster and energy consumption up to 75 percent lower than traditional methods. It’s like drying a full load of laundry in the time it takes to cook dinner!

No more transferring heavy loads between separate machines – the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo washes up to 25kg and dries up to 15kg of laundry in one go, an ideal choice for large families or those with greater laundry demands. The AI Wash function automatically detects the weight, fabric type, and soiling level of each load, dispensing the precise amount of water and detergent needed. It also dynamically adjusts soaking, rinsing, and spinning times for the most effective wash cycle. Once washing is complete, AI Dry takes over, automatically tailoring the drying process to the load’s weight and moisture content.

But the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is more than just a washer and dryer. The unit is equipped with AI Home, a 7-inch LCD display that acts as a command centre, allowing users to easily select functions, adjust settings, and receive recommendations based on their washing habits through machine learning. Furthermore, the AI Home interface can connect with Samsung’s SmartThings app to provide detailed reports on water and energy consumption, adding a layer of transparency that helps users manage their utilities more effectively.

For those particularly concerned with time-saving, this feature is abundant in the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo. The Super Speed cycle allows you to complete a full wash and dry cycle in just 98 minutes (a wash cycle takes only 28 minutes, and drying takes just 70 minutes). The Auto Open Door feature automatically opens the appliance door at the end of each cycle, releasing humid air and preventing musty odours from developing if you don’t immediately unload the laundry. Meanwhile, the Flex Auto Dispense System calculates and dispenses the precise amount of detergent and softener required for each load, thereby optimising wash results and extending fabric life.

To elevate your laundry experience further, the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo seamlessly integrates with the Samsung SmartThings ecosystem. SmartThings Energy allows you to monitor and manage energy consumption in real time, receive monthly reports, and set energy-saving targets. The AI Energy Mode intelligently optimises energy use, reducing consumption by up to 60% for washing and 30% for drying. Home Care proactively notifies you of maintenance needs and assists with troubleshooting, while Clothing Care lets you customise cycles by registering your clothes’ care labels through photos.

The user experience is further enriched by the Digital Inverter Technology. Built to last, the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo features Digital Inverter Technology, using strong magnets for quiet, powerful performance and enhanced energy efficiency. Samsung backs this durability with an industry-leading 20-year warranty on the high-quality inverter motor.

Also committed to environmental responsibility, Samsung has partnered with Ocean Wise Plastics Lab and Patagonia to develop the Less Microfiber Cycle mode. This feature reduces microfiber shedding from synthetic clothes by up to 60% during washing, minimising the release of microplastics into waterways.

“We are excited to share Samsung’s latest innovations in smarter living to this region and to offer a deep dive into the innovations that we are bringing to transform everyday life. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is a glimpse into the future of innovative laundry care, and by harnessing the power of AI, we are redefining what is possible in the home and at the same time, empowering our consumers with smarter and more efficient home solutions,” said Daren Tay, VP & Regional Head of Digital Appliances for Southeast Asia & Oceania, Samsung Electronics.

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is available on the Samsung official store in a Dark Silver Steel finish, priced at S$5,499. Samsung also offers a range of Bespoke AI Laundry options with different capacities and features to suit various needs and budgets.

5 Reasons Why ‘Metaphor: ReFantazio’ Is The Perfect Evolution Of ‘Persona’ And ‘Shin Megami Tensei’ https://geekculture.co/5-reasons-metaphor-refantazio-persona-shin-megami-tensei/ Tue, 08 Oct 2024 01:00:00 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=303458

Combining the best of two worlds for a fresh experience.

The post 5 Reasons Why ‘Metaphor: ReFantazio’ Is The Perfect Evolution Of ‘Persona’ And ‘Shin Megami Tensei’ appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

The core Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) experience is rooted in storytelling, exploration, combat, character customisation, and more, but AtlusPersona series directed recognition and attention to an overlooked element of the process – user interface (UI). Sporting a stylish, visually arresting flair, the franchise has carved out a distinct identity in the space, becoming an epitome of visual creativity over the years.

Metaphor: ReFantazio Persona Shin Megami Tensei Evolution

Metaphor: ReFantazio, the publisher’s latest adventure from Studio Zero, one of Altus’ three developer divisions, will take players on a brand-new journey through medieval times. Fuelled by great ambition, it marks a departure from the publisher’s established formula and bears significance in several ways, especially since it’s the first original game from Studio Zero since its formation in 2016, led by Persona and Shin Megami Tensei alumnus Katsura Hashino.

The veteran’s portfolio speaks for itself. Apart from helming Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne (2003), he also directed Persona 3 (2006), Persona 4 (2008), and Persona 5 (2016), and was intimately involved in the various spin-offs. Joining him on the project are key staff from the Persona series, including character artist Shigenori Soejima and music composer Shoji Meguro, as well as established industry figures like mechanical designer Ikuto Yamashita of Neon Genesis Evangelion fame, and concept artist Kazuma Koda (NieR: Automata, 2017).

Metaphor: ReFantazio Persona Shin Megami Tensei Evolution (2)

Saddled with a wealth of experience and expertise, the highly anticipated outing has been in good hands from the outset. It’s not without challenges, however, as the world building represents the team’s first foray into uncharted waters – instead of Persona’s high-school setting or the post-apocalyptic landscape of Shin Megami Tensei, Metaphor: ReFantazio takes place in the United Kingdom of Euchronia, a medieval fantasy realm mirroring the contemporary real world.

The story picks up after the assassination of the king, which throws the kingdom into chaos and unrest, and places a curse on the Prince, putting him in an eternal slumber. An orphaned boy of the Elda tribe serves as the protagonist who embarks on a journey to lift a curse placed on his childhood friend, the Prince, and rallies support from the kingdom’s people as he attempts to claim the throne in his place.

Metaphor: ReFantazio Persona Shin Megami Tensei Evolution (3)

The premise is certainly a departure from what fans are used to, but the trappings of its forebears lend a comforting and familiar presence to the experience. More than that, Metaphor: ReFantazio promises to evolve the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei mould, cultivating a distinct charm and unique personality that sets it apart as an original standalone title.

Here’s how it fleshes out existing elements in the best way possible.

1) Archetype system presents a new spin on traditional RPG classes

Metaphor: ReFantazio Persona Shin Megami Tensei Evolution (4)

A fresh take on the traditional job system in RPGs, the Archetype mechanic allows any party member to change between different play styles after unlocking them. This transformative type of magic turns users into a new, more powerful form and grants access to 14 base options or lineages, each sporting a striking look that corresponds to the idea of their depictions, and can be evolved through strengthening bonds with foes.

For instance, the Healer wields a staff in hand, while the Knight is designed to be atop a horse. Individual Archetypes, treading on familiar ground, are equipped with different specialisations and move sets, but can work together to use Synthesis Skills, joint attacks performed by two Archetypes, if they resonate with one another.

Metaphor: ReFantazio Persona Shin Megami Tensei Evolution (5)

This addition of Archetypes affords a touch of flexibility that the Persona titles lack. Rather than assigning party members to a clearly defined role a la the latter, Metaphor: ReFantazio invites players to switch things up – so long as it’s done in moderation. Archetypes gain ranks and learn new skills the more they are used, so constant swapping isn’t recommended. Plus, doing so requires Magla, earned from battles alongside money, items, and experience points (EXP), unless full mastery is achieved.

In play, the mechanic works like a charm. The freedom to change between Archetypes is a welcome breath of fresh air, with each oozing sufficient character to feel different from the rest. There are over 40 Archetypes to unlock across multiple lineages and evolutions, allowing for plenty of gameplay variety and experimentation, especially when coupled with Synthesis Skills and positioning requirements, as certain Archetypes perform better at the frontlines than others.

The new coat of paint ensures a fresh experience for Atlus veterans in more ways than one, but there’s the Persona influence to embrace as well. Alongside the visceral Persona Awakening-like action of characters ripping their heart out to evoke Archetypes, load-outs are customised and assigned in the Akademia, akin to the Velvet Room or World of Shadows from Shin Megami Tensei. Oh, and players can pet the adorable cat on the chair, too.

2) Combining real-time action and a turn-based system for more dynamic combat

The combat loop in Metaphor: ReFantazio marches to the same turn-based rhythm as its forebears, but adds a new wrinkle to engaging enemies. Featuring a heavier Shin Megami Tensei skew, the game inherits the Press Turn system instead of Persona’s one-hit-per-round approach (minus One Mores), which gives extra actions for each turn phase.

Performing a critical hit or hitting an enemy’s weakness earns players an additional action – a double-edged sword that can also be used against them by enemies. What’s new here, though, is that Synthesis Skills consume two turn icons – responsible for determining the process of switching between the player’s and opponent’s turn – and calls for more strategic planning, such as when best to unleash them.

Initiating combat is where the real-time action element comes into play. Slashing foes out in the wild grants a turn advantage and whittles down their health, and the reverse works to the same effect, where being ambushed lands a severe disadvantage. It’s a little more fleshed out than the stealth segments in Persona 5 with a dodge-roll feature and Archetype-dependent attacking style. The risk-and-reward play style elevates the thrill factor, while the hybrid combat system improves pacing by easing the transition between exploration and entering battles, aided by stylish UI animation. The crisp and smooth quality that comes with attacking enemies is a bonus, making combat an engaging and enjoyable affair.

3) Opening up the world for greater exploration

Screenshot

Similar to Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance and stepping away from the Persona tradition, Metaphor: ReFantazio offers a free-roaming experience. Exploration is no longer confined to the city where the story takes place, extending into other towns, villages, camps, and dungeons. Travel routes and traversal methods can be established, with a caravan-esque vehicle called the Gauntlet Runner acting as a hub of sorts.

In transit (because navigation takes time), the protagonist can carry out various tasks like cooking, reading, doing laundry, and under specific circumstances, fishing and bathing, marking a welcome reprieve from battling. Spending time with companions, meanwhile, reveals unique interactions and the opportunity to strengthen relationships, which affects combat as stronger bonds unlock new Archetypes and abilities.

To enjoy some calm and tranquility onboard the Gauntlet Runner, head over to the deck to watch the whole travelling process unfold in real time. Alternatively, there are side activities in towns that further push the unwinding agenda, such as bungee jumping and milking cows.

4) Time management is more important than ever

Building on the calendar system in Persona 3 and beyond, Metaphor: ReFantazio tightens its grip on time for a more realistic experience. There are morning and night phases to each day, and planning your travel around major events continues to be necessary – even more so here. Not only is travelling directly intertwined with the calendar, but the countdown to major story events also makes a return, reinforcing the need for progress at an appropriate pace.

It’s a subtle touch that can culminate in surprising, sometimes unfortunate, and impactful encounters. If too much time is spent on, say, faraway expeditions or exploring a city before picking a location, players can end up in an optional dungeon on a rainy day, spawning stronger enemies. Then, there’s the extra factor of winning over the hearts of individuals and gathering support to become the next king, which requires increased social stats, obtained by participating in certain activities.

Between exploring, completing quests, building bonds, and everything in between, the game presents the biggest race against time. The unpredictability, however, is all part of the charm, and players can look forward to its vast replayability potential.

5) Exceptional music and stylish UI, tailored for a medieval world

While it’s easy to draw comparisons between the artistic flourish in Metaphor: ReFantazio and the Persona games, this latest adventure embraces its visual identity differently. It eschews a thematic palette for a striking mix of pink, teal, aquamarine, varying hues of blues and greens, splatter and fade effects, and a cloudy, grainy texture that tones down the bold and eye-popping strokes of before.

The music score, more aligned with Shin Megami Tensei, represents a leap into rich classical orchestration, accompanied by urgent chanting and Latin-like choral harmonies. In particular, the strings and brass exude heightened drama and tension for battles, playing nicely into the medieval motif.

Ambition has a name, and it’s Metaphor: ReFantazio. A culmination of Atlus’ past works, the studio’s latest is a sprawling adventure rooted in both novelty and innovation. The standalone adventure inherits the hallmarks of the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei formula but commands attention with its new direction – narratively, mechanically, and artistically. For Atlus veterans, the evolution proves to freshen up familiar experiences in all the ways that matter.

Metaphor: ReFantazio launches on 11 October for PlayStation 4, PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.

TGS 2024: ‘Monster Hunter Wilds’ Makes Joining The Hunt More Enticing And Exciting Than Before – Preview https://geekculture.co/tgs-2024-monster-hunter-wilds-preview/ Sun, 06 Oct 2024 15:49:24 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=303336

Perhaps it’s time to finally become a Monster Hunter convert.

The post TGS 2024: ‘Monster Hunter Wilds’ Makes Joining The Hunt More Enticing And Exciting Than Before – Preview appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

On a personal level, the Monster Hunter series has always been more of a miss than a hit. The premise, reflected fully in its name, has a steep learning curve and its rewards-based gameplay can be frustrating for some. It’s blasphemy, some may cry, and they wouldn’t be wrong – with over 100 million units sold worldwide (as of May 2024) and an enthusiastic, dedicated following, the influence of Capcom’s beloved series cannot be understated.

Monster Hunter Wilds TGS 2024 Preview

Much of the charm stems from the core gameplay loop, but the rinse-and-repeat grind doesn’t resonate with everyone, requiring time and effort to understand and get into the pace of things. Imagine the surprise when a 20-or-so-minute demo of Monster Hunter Wilds at Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024 proved a lot more enjoyable than expected, presenting a convincing and strong argument to finally join the hunt.

Taking after its predecessor, 2018’s Monster Hunter: World, the highly-anticipated sequel builds on several familiar elements and is set in the Forbidden Lands, an unpopulated locale filled with beasts to kill. There seems to be more narrative involvement here, if the opening of the preview is anything to go by, revealing a lengthy cutscene that highlights two things: a new region of the map is now accessible, and a team of explorers are starting an expedition to hunt down a monster long thought to be extinct (in true Monster Hunter fashion).

Monster Hunter Wilds TGS 2024 Preview (2)

It transitions seamlessly into the tutorial segment, as players stumble upon a young girl being pursued by several worm-like creatures and help fend off the threat. The slinger makes a welcome return here, allowing crafted or collected pods to be flung at enemies, while the attached grapple hook unlocks the ability to snag items from a distance. All of this is done atop a Seikret mount, which can either be controlled manually or auto-piloted towards the current objective.

After the chase sequence, the girl introduces herself as Nona and enlists their aid to locate her missing brother Y’sai, with the voice-acting – a series’ first for the player character and Palico companions – making it easier to immerse into the story. Before starting the rescue mission, a weapon needs to be equipped, and Monster Hunter Wilds offers the same 14 weapon types as before, from the lance to insect sword. A nice touch about the selection process is being able to ask for recommendations, which proves handy for newcomers.

Monster Hunter Wilds TGS 2024 Preview (3)

With dual blades in hand, it’s time to kill some beasts. Travelling through the sand-filled, gritty landscape yielded a sense of freedom, reinforcing the game’s first foray into the open-world genre. There aren’t many unique sights to check out, but the enhanced visual fidelity is prominent, conveyed through swirling dust and other effects.

Indeed, the upcoming romp is a graphical spectacle. As expected from a title developed on the RE Engine, Capcom’s internal game engine used for Street Fighter 6, Monster Hunter Rise, and more, it delivers crisp cinematic presentation and more intricate environmental design amid occasional dips in the frame rate, both during and outside of exploration.

Soon enough, players will find a Chatacabra, a hardy, spiky beast with a massive tongue standing in the way and attacking an injured Y’sai. Unleashing the dual blades in combat brought immense satisfaction, with each strike packing a fluid and dynamic touch. The Demon and Archdemon modes make a return as well, granting a boost to damage output and showcasing some sleek combo attacks, whirlwind style.

The biggest change in Monster Hunter Wilds, though, is the Focus Strike move set, which highlights a monster’s weak points and allows them to be exploited. Damage them enough to form wounds, and a red glow will appear, opening a window of opportunity to deal more blows and trigger a brief cinematic attack that knocks the enemy over. From there on, it’s all about following up with some extra hits, getting drops, and chasing the Chatacabra when it flees to its next haunt.

Depending on where the creature is, there may be other ways of causing damage without directly attacking it. A cave setting, for instance, lets Bowgun wielders (sorry, melee fighters) shoot stalactites from the ceiling, causing them to drop on enemies and introducing more gameplay variety into the mix. Fortunately, the speedy and fleet-footed Seikret makes it easy to chase targets down, and the auto-navigation feature is another point in its favour.

While riding the mount, players will be able to sharpen their weapon, use items, attack creatures, and launch aerial assaults along the way, offering a welcome touch of convenience. Putting the slinger to use proved to be a smooth, fuss-free affair, with the transition between exploration and combat feeling more natural and seamless.

Monster Hunter Wilds also inherits the SOS flare system from its predecessor, but it was difficult to gauge its effectiveness in the preview. Activating the feature brings three support hunters, either live or computer-controlled, into the middle of a hunt, offering a nifty helpline for solo players who require extra aid for stronger critters. However, the prompt only showed up near the end of the boss fight, which was already manageable as part of the tutorial, raising questions about NPC behaviour like their coordination efficiency or the duration of their presence.

Due to limited playtime and trial slots, there wasn’t a chance to try out the other demo, which would have introduced Alpha Doshaguma, a colossal bison-like monster, the ability to wield a second weapon while mounted, and its dynamic weather conditions and ecosystem. Still, the brief 20 minutes presented a tantalising tease of a world that never impressed in the way it ever did others, showcasing enthralling combat and an enticing open world. Perhaps it’s time to finally become a Monster Hunter convert.

Monster Hunter Wilds releases 28 February 2025 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The first official Studio Ghibli exhibition in Singapore has plenty to offer.

For nearly 40 years, Studio Ghibli has shown that the charm of animation is timeless. The industry giant is a veteran at pushing the limits of imagination, crafting heartfelt stories that continue to trap hearts and captivate audiences, from the earlier days of My Neighbour Totoro (1988) and Spirited Away (2001) to last year’s The Boy and The Heron.

Starting 4 October, fans will be able to relive the magic at the ArtScience Museum in Singapore. The country’s first-ever official Studio Ghibli exhibition brings 16 large-scale, immersive theatrical sets to 11 galleries spanning two levels, each handpicked by the animation powerhouse. Led by films featuring strong female protagonists like Princess Mononoke (1997), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), and Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), it also rounds out the attraction’s ‘Year of Extraordinary Women’ lineup for 2024.

The World of Studio Ghibli Singapore

The World of Studio Ghibli experience begins even before stepping into the museum. A giant sculpture from Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (2008) greets visitors by the entrance, setting the mood leading into Basement 2. On the outside, a display montage plays snippets of the studio’s works, accompanied by a description of the exhibition and an illustration depicting its logo. Entering the space unlocks a trip down memory lane, where movie posters line both sides of the walls and are categorised into their respective era.

Kicking off the journey is Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), which lists the film’s synopsis, character profiles, and other relevant information — a presentation that carries over to all showcases. An impressive, moving recreation of the titular castle cuts a magnificent figure, paving the way to Howl’s living room and revealing Calcifer.

Transitioning seamlessly into Castle in the Sky (1986), the space breathes life into the iconic scene of Pazu and his encounter with Sheeta as she falls from the sky. The photo spot is joined by installations modelled after other notable moments, including Pazu’s rescue of Sheeta and the pair’s escape along the tracks of a mining railway.

My Neighbour Totoro (1988), meanwhile, spices up the immersion with a box art installation spotlighting the Catbus, a peek-hole experience and photo spot featuring Totoro, and hands-on activities, where visitors can try their hand at folding origami and creating a commemorative thaumatrope.

Moving on to the third level, the galleries boast more original sculptures and the splash art of The Boy and the Heron on its outer wall. Hanging down from the ceiling is Nausicaä on her glider, charting a natural continuation into another flight-based adventure: Porco Rosso (1992). Fighter jets take centrestage here, but enthusiasts can look forward to a recreation of Porco Rosso’s remote island hideout that promises great detail and authenticity.

The next segment, paying tribute to Pom Poko (1994), basks in a retro aesthetic. An old-school television set evokes feelings of nostalgia, with a box art setup offering some interactive fun — simply spin the wheel to see the tanuki, or a Japanese raccoon dog, shapeshift.

The lighthearted tone takes a subtle turn when wandering through the lush forest of Princess Mononoke (1997), aligning with its theme of environmentalism. While Ashitaka and San are the stars of this exhibit, a projection display keeps things fresh with a clever presentation format.

As for Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), visitors can check out a glorious recreation of Gütiokipänjä bakery, where Kiki and her cat Jiji work, and insert themselves into memorable scenes from the animated feature. Much attention has also been poured into showcasing the smaller-scale installations, serving as a nice nod to the source material.

Topping off the World of Studio Ghibli journey is Spirited Away (2001), which takes visitors through the bathhouse, Yubaba’s office, and Chihiro’s train ride with No-Face. An activity corner invites them to unleash their artistic abilities and draw soot sprites introduced in the movie.

Before exiting the exhibition, there will be a retail store where fans can swing by and grab some keepsakes. It offers a wide range of official merchandise, from art books and toy plushes to bags and clear folders, so be prepared to summon your wallets.

As part of the programme, ArtScience Cinema is organising free screenings of two documentaries on the fourth level: Kazuo Oga – Ghibli’s Image Artisan – The Artist Who Made Totoro’s Forest (2007) and The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness (2013), directed by Mami Sunada. A film festival spotlighting several Studio Ghibli films will also be screened in cinemas islandwide.

It seems that self-care has found a new ally in technology. Finch, a self-care widget pet, emerges as a novel tool to assist individuals dealing with various mental health challenges, from anxiety and depression to ADHD. This innovative app centres around a charming virtual bird, which users can accompany on daily adventures, encouraging both the avatar and the user to grow and heal.

Upon commencing your journey with Finch, the app prompts you to set personal goals, which can range from simple daily tasks like getting out of bed to more involved activities such as meal prepping. The goals are suggested with empathy, recognising that everyone’s capabilities and challenges are unique, thus removing any judgment about the ‘difficulty’ of the goals. Users can customise their virtual bird and even name it, adding a personal touch to the experience.

What sets Finch apart is its interactive features that foster a community-centric approach to mental health. Users can connect with friends and family, sharing ‘good vibes’ like virtual hugs or high-fives, enhancing the communal support system.

Additionally, the app offers a plethora of activities aimed at personal growth. From focus timers with ambient sounds to breathing exercises and gentle yoga, these features are occasionally integrated into the user’s routine, promoting mindfulness and self-reflection, and offering rewards in the form of in-game currency. This currency can be used to acquire new accessories for the pet, enhancing the gaming aspect of the app.

The journaling feature is particularly robust, allowing users to document their thoughts and activities freely or in response to prompts. The app analyses these entries to offer insights into emotional patterns, sometimes with amusing inaccuracies, yet often providing valuable reflections on one’s mental state.

Finch provides a weekly summary that attempts to conclude user-inputted data, offering an automated yet insightful look at one’s emotional well-being over time. Users can also opt for the paid version of Finch (Finch Plus), which opens all of the self-care features on the app. A subscription of S$14.98 a month/S$99.98 for 12 months is required to unlock over 100 exercises, access mailbox content, and change tag emojis, among others.

While not a substitute for professional mental health care, Finch offers a unique blend of game-like interaction and mental health support, making it a delightful addition to anyone’s daily routine. This app is recommended for those seeking a sprinkle of joy and digital companionship through a charmingly animated bird, enriching their path to self-care and mental wellness.

Finch is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store for free, with an optional membership plan available. More information about Finch can be found on the website.

TGS 2024: ‘Sonic Rumble’ Makes Every Series Character Playable For The First Time https://geekculture.co/tgs-2024-sonic-rumble-makes-every-series-character-playable-for-the-first-time/ Thu, 03 Oct 2024 18:17:03 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=303155

The entire Sonic roster is ready to rumble.

This interview has been edited for clarity.

From Emerald Hill to Studiopolis, going fast has always been Sonic’s way of life. It’s a poetic embodiment of the blue hedgehog’s humble beginnings as a competing mascot, where it sprinted ahead of the competition and led Sega to become one of the leading video game companies in the early 1990s.

TGS 2024 Sonic Rumble

As the speedster slowly grew into a household name, more adventures and characters were added to the flagship franchise, with recurring elements bringing a sense of familiarity to various unique game mechanics and stories. But the race continues to be a largely solo affair, so Sonic Rumble is bringing along some company to bask in the fun.

It won’t be a small number, either. Marking a departure from the usual single-player console experience, the first multiplayer party game in the franchise will pit up to 32 contestants against one another in battle royale challenges. Players must compete to gather the most Rings or be the fastest across three rounds – first, a simple run-to-the-end minigame, then one of the Survival, Hunt, or Team modes, and finally, Ring Battle.

The driving force behind the genre leap is straightforward, rooted in a desire to spread joy. Speaking to select Southeast Asia media during Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024, Sonic creative officer Takashi Iizuka shares how doing so can cultivate the co-op potential of its game.

TGS 2024 Sonic Rumble (2)
Game director Makoto Tase (left) and Sonic chief officer Takashi Iizuka (right).

“The Sonic series has predominantly focused on single-player titles,” explains the industry veteran. “Its reputation as a multiplayer game hasn’t been particularly strong, [and] that’s why we really want the game to be played by families, friends, and people around the world.”

After all, good company can always be counted on for an enjoyable time. Being regarded as a mobile and PC title certainly helps its chances, with the increased accessibility allowing players to jump in easily and indulge in short bursts of gaming. There are a few ways to get the party started, including joining a random match alone or with friends, creating a private room to play together, and squad mode, where members join forces to compete as a team.

For longtime fans, there’s another incentive laying in wait: the ability to play as any franchise character from the outset. The game’s diverse roster naturally includes the main gang of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, and Shadow, but players will also have access to villains such as Dr. Eggman and variants like Metal Sonic and Silver the Hedgehog. “This is the first time that all characters can be played in the Sonic universe,” Iizuka confirms.

By all accounts, this premise may come across as unbalanced – and for obvious reasons. The titular hedgehog is known to be the fastest thing alive, and pitting him against slower enemies means there are no stakes at play. To give each player a fair shot at victory, Sonic Rumble will fix the speeds of all characters and equip them with similar loadouts while retaining their signature traits.

“We want to have a level playing field, and that’s why there are no major differences in the characters’ abilities. However, we wanted to adapt their most unique traits, for example, be it their signature movement or their abilities, so Tails will still have his Tail Copter [signature move],” reveals director Makoto Tase, highlighting that one of its greatest appeals is being able to “represent your favourite character as you play”.

Unlike its mainline counterparts, this co-op entry takes place in a twisted toy world created by Dr. Eggman that turns Sonic and his friends into miniature figures, which feeds into the idea of equal competition. Iizuka adds, “That’s exactly why we wanted to create something that wasn’t rooted in the normal physics of the Sonic world. We decided on toys, because it’d be the same [experience] for each character.”

The other half of the equation involves gameplay variety. While Sonic titles have always emphasised fun, it’s even more important in Sonic Rumble because of the rinse-and-repeat loop, which can become dull quickly if not managed well. Driven by the design philosophy to create “no two battles [that] are alike” and honor the most iconic aspects of the series, the team has incorporated familiar elements like multiple paths and lower levels that players can fall to, as well as iconic stages like Green Hill Zone or Chemical Plant.

Environmental effects will spice up the competition, too. Stages that feature lava or ice, for example, can cause unsuspecting players to fall into molten jaws of death or slip on surfaces, but the game is never over until it’s over. Comebacks are part of the core Sonic Rumble experience, and a lot of attention was given to fitting its delivery with the gameplay mechanics.

Curiously enough, one of the biggest challenges of crafting battle-royale chaos spilled into artistic territory. Amid the genre and formula tweaks, Tase expressed the difficulty of adapting the character’s in-game design to set it apart from both the Modern and Classic Sonic look.

“We wanted to create something that embodied both his coolness and showed off a cuter side of his character than usual,” he shares. “There are fans who expect Sonic to be cuter, others expect him to be more cool-leaning, but we wanted to create a design that satisfies all fans.”

Sonic Rumble releases worldwide for Android, iOS, and PC in Winter 2024.
