James Gunn has excited fans with the announcement that Krypto the Superdog will debut in the live-action Superman film, which wrapped production this summer. Inspired by Gunn’s own rescue dog, Ozu, Krypto will be featured for the first time in a live-action setting, expanding his role from the comic pages to the big screen.
In a heartfelt social media post, Gunn shared how adopting Ozu, a dog rescued from a hoarding situation, influenced the addition of Krypto into the Superman script. “Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him,” Gunn wrote on X/Twitter.
“I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.”
Krypto the Superdog first emerged in DC Comics in 1955 and has since appeared in various animated formats, including his own series, Krypto the Superdog, which aired on Cartoon Network and The CW’s Kids’ WB. Unlike his animated portrayals where he lands on Earth as Superman’s pet from Krypton, this marks Krypto’s first live-action film appearance. Historically, Krypto shares similar superpowers with Superman, such as super strength, flight, and invulnerability.
The upcoming Superman film, directed by Gunn, will follow the titular hero, played by David Corenswet, as he navigates his dual heritage and embodies ideals of truth, justice, and human kindness in a cynical world. The film’s storyline focuses on Superman’s efforts to balance his Kryptonian powers with his earthly upbringing.
The cast includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, with additional roles filled by Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced, and Nathan Fillion.
Superman will fly into cinemas on 11 July 2025.
