Badge art designs have never looked more stylish.

]]>

Since its inception in 1977, the Star Wars franchise has left an indelible mark on the pop culture scene — to such a degree that it even has a commemorative day to call its own. Taking place on 4 May (dubbed “May the Fourth”) every year, it acts as a wordplay on the catchphrase “May the Force be with you”, but is far from the only celebratory affair for fans.

Enter Star Wars Celebration, a large convention that embraces a shared love for the long-running sci-fi franchise. Held annually, barring a few exceptions, it brings the excitement to varying locations around the world, with the 2025 iteration making its way to Japan. It’s nothing short of apt that it will feature badge art designs in the style of ukiyo-e, a tradition of Japanese art that thrived in the 17th to 19th centuries.

As unveiled by the official Star Wars website, the illustrations are done by Japanese artist TAKUMI, who has created official promotional art for Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder and The Mandalorian Season 3. The first wave of designs features Darth Vader, Yoda, Luke Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and The Mandalorian and Grogu, revealing five out of 17 designs.

Explaining the connection between Japanese culture and Star Wars,” he explained, “When I was working on the badge art, I spent a lot of time revisiting the characteristics and backgrounds of each character, thinking about how to adapt their narrative into the ukiyo-e. I looked back at the stories depicted in the masterpieces by ukiyo-e artists of the past, analysing the motifs and elements woven into their compositions, and thought about which characters’ narratives would best fit with those themes. The research continued until I found the right theme for each character.”

TAKUMI continued, “Another key element was reimagining the characters’ costumes and weapons with a Japanese influence. This process required blending them with aspects of traditional Japanese clothing, decorations, armour, and weaponry, and determining the right level of modification. It was a challenging task, but once the ideal style was achieved, it was immensely rewarding.”

It’s no secret that the franchise was largely inspired by the works of Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa — 1958’s The Hidden Fortress in particular — which makes the artistic blend a nice homage to its roots.

Star Wars Celebration Japan will run from 18 to 20 April 2025 in Makuhari Messe, located in Chiba Prefecture just outside of Tokyo, with tickets currently on sale.

The closest thing we'll get to an Alien anime right now.

The post ‘Alien: Monday’ Is an 80s’ Style Anime Short Film That Took Over 6 Years To Make appeared first on Geek Culture.

It’s been 9 years since OatKing Animation posted up an Empire-focused Star Wars animated short, drawn with the crazy detail and shading in classic 80s’ style anime. The video is at 14 million views now, which is testament of how viral it had gotten over the years.

This time, with just less than a month till the theatrical release of Alien: Romulus, OatKing spent over 6 years to create a 15-minute Alien: MONDAY short film tribute to Ridley Scott’s Alien and classic 80’s anime.

While we wait for the possibility of an official Alien anime series or movie in the years to come, we’ll have to settle for a live-action series that’s currently in the works at FX.

In with the old.

The post ‘Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’ Revisits Pixel Art Glory With Fanmade Creation appeared first on Geek Culture.

Remember when we used to imagine what a 3D version of Pokémon would look like while we were enjoying these games before 2013? Fast forward to today and the likes of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Pokémon Legends: Arceus are being enjoyed in all of their 3D glory. Ironically, it’s backwards now, with fans like Twitter user @Roncally_Hayate imagining how our polygonal characters from the games today would look like in pixel art of days past.

The Japanese creator took the time to design Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s eight gym leaders in pixel art, taking inspiration from the character design traits used in Pokémon Black and White, the last of the games that were bitmapped. The user even went to lengths to animate these characters — just look at how cute Iono is at the bottom right, flailing the sleeves of her oversized black-and-yellow jacket as her Magnemite hairclips rotate!

The fan artist also created a video and remixed the battle background music of all eight gym leaders in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet to mirror the style of Pokémon Black and White’s Nintendo DS soundtrack. Check it out below:

The video further expands on the animations that reflect the memorable eccentricities of these eight gym leaders, like how elderly woman Ryme, MC of RIP, leader of Montenevera’s gym is bobbing along as she raps.

We would likely never get another 32-bit Pokémon game, but we have users like @Roncally_Hayate to thank when it comes to fanmade creations and imagining how 3D characters today would look in pixel art glory.

Sega Joins Japan Graduation Festivities With Iconic Characters Chalkboard Art

In life, there are several milestones worthy of celebration, and graduation is certainly one of them. For the folks in Japan, the month of March is when both high school and university students can finally relax, eager to take on the next step in their lives. To make things even more fun for the graduation festivities, Sega has chimed in with some special words of encouragement.

In a video posted on Twitter, the Japanese video game giant shared the message, “To the graduates soaring towards the future: A cheer for you,” alongside what appears to be really intricate and gorgeous chalkboard art of the company’s many iconic characters.

The graduation celebration is led by characters including Sega mascot Sonic the Hedgehog, Ichiban Kasuga from the Yakuza: Like a Dragon series, Aruru/Arle and Puyo (round, slime-like creatures) from the Puyo Puyo series, and Joker from Persona 5. They are all drawn alongside cherry blossom petals, with the short video set to Hatsune Miku/Halyosy’s graduation-themed song, Sakura no Ame.

Behind the Sega initiative to celebrate the month of graduation is artist Mayumi Kawano, who first started out drawing chalk art in 2009. Mayumi has also weighed in about her masterpiece and shared that she enjoys playing video games as well. This made this particular job extremely gratifying and satisfying to work on.

While not all of us can go back to the days of graduation and look forward to what comes next, we most certainly can enjoy great art every once in a while, especially when it comes with a roster of characters like those from Sega..

Standing at eight inches tall, Potato Head by Stella Peaches presents a youthful, stylish spin on the Toy Story icon by putting it in a colourful, polka dot-clad fit. The vinyl figure holds a paintbrush in one hand and a palette in another, and can be styled in three distinct ways using interchangeable crowns and removable gasses.

As the daughter of graffiti and print artist Stikki Peaches, Stella is no stranger to such artistic endeavours — her works have already been featured on the streets of Paris and Montreal, despite her tender age.

The Potato Head collectible is available for US$159 on the Mighty Jaxx website, with all proceeds from sale going to charity.

Culture Cartel has announced that this year’s event will take place on 1-4 December 2022 at *SCAPE. Previous iterations of the event have taken place at the F1 Pit Building, although the 2020 edition was held virtually in response to COVID-19 health and safety measures.

If Culture Cartel 2022 is anything like previous editions, attendees can also look forward to rare and exclusive collectibles, eye-catching street art, heart-pumping music, as well as conversations and masterclasses with creative leaders.

More information about the event, such as registration information and participating brands and personalities, will be revealed on Culture Cartel’s Instagram soon.

The right way to revisit nostalgia.

Pokémon LEGO

It’s always a good time to revisit nostalgia, and one Pokémon fan is adding some extra flair with his return to the Kanto region. The brick enthusiast has committed to building the entire map out of LEGO, with four parts already complete.

Reddit user ‘Bugscags1‘ has been documenting their progress on the Pokémon subreddit, where they recreated Pallet Town, Route 1, Viridian City, and Route 2 out of microscale LEGO parts. With other iconic locations like Cinnebar island, Pewter City, and the Lavender Town yet to receive the brick treatment, there’s still a long way to go before the entire thing is complete, but these cool-looking and adorable builds offer plenty of promise ahead.

And we aren’t the only ones who think that way. The creation has been getting a lot of support, with many fans praising its execution, and expressing their excitement for the next parts. Prior to this, ‘Budscags’ also successfully built the Johto region from Gen 2 out of the same microscale LEGO bricks.

It’s an apt tribute to the Gen 1 line of games, Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, which have pushed the franchise to the beloved crowd favourite that it is today. It’s unfortunate that official Pokémon LEGO has yet to be a thing, but at least there are still the Nanoblock and Mega Construx builds to satisfy the construct-and-collect itch.

Way to go, ‘Bugscags1’!

A plastic model kit of paper trash is totally pointless but we want one!

Just when we thought Japanese plastic model kits wouldn’t get more radical with with 2020’s 2/5 scale PlayStation and Sega Saturn, and 1/1 scale Nissin Cup Noodle, we now have a Trash Plastic Model Kit. This totally pointless new kit is conceived by none other than useless thing inventor Marina Fujiwara. He was made popular by his 1/1 scale cucumber roll sushi plastic model kit released in 2021.

Fujiwara’s Sushiplastic model kit.

According to StudioSYUTO, the trash plastic model is made of 100% recycled materials and is environmentally friendly.

Instructions are not enclosed in the kit, because the creator’s intent was for the builder to have some fun and treat it like a puzzle. Each kit includes parts to make two balls of trash. Best of all, no glue or paint is required, and the finished model stands at around 40mm tall.

StudioSYUTO’s Trash Plastic Model is expected to release in December 2022 and retails at ¥1,540 (US$11.50). Now, how awesome is that? Time to head out to Daiso to grab a mini trash bin to build a diorama out of this.

Transformers G1 OVA Fan Film Imagines Starscream vs Megatron Aerial Battle https://geekculture.co/transformers-g1-ova-fan-film/ Wed, 27 Jul 2022 16:50:06 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=238812

This makes us clamour for more Transformers G1 goodness!

The post Transformers G1 OVA Fan Film Imagines Starscream vs Megatron Aerial Battle appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

When it comes to snivelling, backstabbing minions with transparent ambitions, there is none quite like the shrewd and cowardly Decepticon, Starscream.

Sure, we know he wants to replace Megatron as the leader of the Decepticons and which villainous leader is without a treacherous lackey, but there are many reasons why Starscream stands out as a fan favourite. Firstly, he transforms into an amazing McDonnel-Douglass F-15C Eagle, and then there is the voice. The G1 character was voiced to perfection by Chris Latta aka Christopher Charles Collins, and we mourned his death when he was obliterated by Galvatron for usurping Megatron’s position.

Was that battle satisfying? Probably not since the 1985 Transformers animated movie was made to sell toys and there was a decree to wipe out the original Autobots and Decepticons, to make way for newer toys, but fans have always wondered – what would a Starscream vs Megatron fight look like?

Well, Starscream megafan 87render, a CG artist who makes anime fan films, and apparently specialises in jet planes and cell shading, has taken a stab at it, creating an exhilarating five-minute film that brings us back to G1 Transformers, with Megatron and Starscream. It’s the duo in robot mode for sure, and his love for jets is probably why Megatron doesn’t transform into his original Walther P38 gun mode, but turns into a Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk Stealth plane instead.

But it’s a small twist because the rest of the short film, which also brings back the Decepticon flagship, Nemesis, is a great throwback. 87render even got a voice actor for Starscream that sounds so much like Latta, and fans will likely recall the sense of joy to hear Cobra Commande…. I mean, Starscream challenge Megatron again.

“You’re a fool for fighting me in the skies Megatron!” shouts Starscream, as he manipulates his form into a semi-Gerwalk mode, and unleashes a volley of missiles at his commander, who has received an upgrade in the form of a new body.

This makes us clamour for more Transformers G1 goodness! None of that Bayformers nonsense, or the Japanese-led Transformers Armada, Energon and Cybertron Unicron Trilogy.

It was inevitable, just a couple of months back, Final Fantasy fans were treated to an unlicensed Tifa Lockhart 1/4 scale resin statue doing the Jack-O pose. This time, China-based NL Studio has come up with a perfectly balanced Thanos resin statue, as all things should be.

You know what would be perfect to top it all off? If only the statue had a miniature Ant-Man perched atop Thanos’ butt.

The Thanos resin statue will be a limited run, with only 199 pieces made, and will come in two sizes, 1/4 scale (priced from 2,000 RMB ~ US$300) and 1/6 scale (priced from 1,000 RMB ~ US$150). The statue will come in two editions, a standard edition with Thanos presumably fully clothed and a premium edition with a swappable nude body (as seen above).

Pre-orders for NL Studio’s Thanos Jack-O Pose Resin Statue will commence on 18 July and it is expected to ship in Q4 of 2022.
