Apple to expand service in global rollout.

The post Apple Pay Turns 10, Partners DBS In Singapore For Installment Loans appeared first on Geek Culture.

Apple is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its mobile payment service, Apple Pay, announcing that its service will evolve in the near future and provide additional features, alongside expanded instalment loan options.

As part of its global rollout, Apple will partner with DBS Bank in Singapore, granting access to instalment loan options for eligible credit or debit cards. Options outside of Singapore also include ANZ in Australia, Citi and Synchrony in the United States, and CaixaBank in Spain.

This news follows Apple’s decision in June to roll back plans for its Pay Later feature, instead prioritising partnerships with local financial institutes worldwide. This would allow banking partners to stay connected with Apple Pay instead of competing with the Cupertino giant directly.

In addition, Apple Pay users in Singapore will soon be able to redeem rewards when they check out with Apple Pay online or in-app on iOS devices. This feature is steadily being rolled out for eligible DBS cards locally but has already kicked off for users in the U.S. with iOS 18, with the ability to see their PayPal balance when using their PayPal debit card coming to Apple Wallet next year.

On the Apple Newsroom, Jennifer Bailey, Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, expressed excitement about providing users with more ways to pay and offering enhanced flexibility, while maintaining the high levels of trust and security that users expect.

“From the outset, we envisioned a world where you could use your iPhone to seamlessly pay for everything, all while keeping your personal and financial information safe and private,” said Bailey.

Apple Pay is currently used worldwide by hundreds of millions of consumers across 78 markets, available on millions of websites and physical storefronts, and is supported by more than 11,000 bank and network partners. The platform can now be accessed on third-party browsers and computers.

Scalpers Are Hawking Free Disney Fan Event Tickets For S$150 https://geekculture.co/scalpers-are-hawking-free-disney-fan-event-tickets-for-sgd-150/ Wed, 16 Oct 2024 06:25:25 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=304341

The common enemy of everyone strikes again.

The post Scalpers Are Hawking Free Disney Fan Event Tickets For S$150 appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

It’s a tale as old as time — tickets for a highly-anticipated event are sold online, only to be snapped up quickly by the crowd. Hours later, listings with marked-up prices appear on web-based marketplaces, where scalpers rear their ugly heads and wait to ensnare their prey.

The latest profit-making effort comes by way of the upcoming Disney Presents: A Night of Stars event in Singapore, promising an opportunity to meet actors from several anticipated Disney films and Disney+ series, including Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Brave New World) and Korean stars like Park Eunbin, Sul Kyunggu, Yoon Chanyoung, and Park Byungeun. While admission is free, entry is limited to successful registrations on the Marina Bay Sands website, which opened this morning at 10am SGT.

And like clockwork, the scalping forces are quick to act. Two separate listings on Carousell have put out an offer of S$100 and S$150, with the former even accepting bids. “Selling 4 tickets, only selling as pairs,” reads its description at the time of writing. “PM your best quote. Current bid: [S$]110 each ticket”.

Meanwhile, the second post writes that the tickets are being let go at a fixed rate of S$150 each due to “overwhelming bids”. There’s also an accompanying paragraph that touts the seller’s ability to alter the names on the tickets:

“Marquee – scan barcode to enter. Will change to your name before sending e-tickets for ID check. Names CAN be changed. If others are saying it can’t be done, they just don’t know how to change it via the site. You cannot enter if the ticket name does not match your ID. :)”

Marquee refers to the iconic nightclub MARQUEE Singapore, located within Marina Bay Sands. Disney Presents: A Night of Stars will be held on 20 November from 5.30pm to 7.30pm SGT, but since there’s still some time leading up to the grand fan event, more listings from scalpers are expected to drop — and likely with higher prices, reinforcing once again how they continue to be the bane of everyone’s existence.

The World of Studio Ghibli At ArtScience Museum Singapore Brings Totoro-lly Magical Experience To Life https://geekculture.co/world-of-studio-ghibli-artscience-museum-singapore/ Fri, 04 Oct 2024 11:07:12 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=303178

The first official Studio Ghibli exhibition in Singapore has plenty to offer.

The post The World of Studio Ghibli At ArtScience Museum Singapore Brings Totoro-lly Magical Experience To Life appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

For nearly 40 years, Studio Ghibli has shown that the charm of animation is timeless. The industry giant is a veteran at pushing the limits of imagination, crafting heartfelt stories that continue to trap hearts and captivate audiences, from the earlier days of My Neighbour Totoro (1988) and Spirited Away (2001) to last year’s The Boy and The Heron.

Starting 4 October, fans will be able to relive the magic at the ArtScience Museum in Singapore. The country’s first-ever official Studio Ghibli exhibition brings 16 large-scale, immersive theatrical sets to 11 galleries spanning two levels, each handpicked by the animation powerhouse. Led by films featuring strong female protagonists like Princess Mononoke (1997), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), and Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), it also rounds out the attraction’s ‘Year of Extraordinary Women’ lineup for 2024.

The World of Studio Ghibli Singapore

The World of Studio Ghibli experience begins even before stepping into the museum. A giant sculpture from Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (2008) greets visitors by the entrance, setting the mood leading into Basement 2. On the outside, a display montage plays snippets of the studio’s works, accompanied by a description of the exhibition and an illustration depicting its logo. Entering the space unlocks a trip down memory lane, where movie posters line both sides of the walls and are categorised into their respective era.

Kicking off the journey is Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), which lists the film’s synopsis, character profiles, and other relevant information — a presentation that carries over to all showcases. An impressive, moving recreation of the titular castle cuts a magnificent figure, paving the way to Howl’s living room and revealing Calcifer.

Transitioning seamlessly into Castle in the Sky (1986), the space breathes life into the iconic scene of Pazu and his encounter with Sheeta as she falls from the sky. The photo spot is joined by installations modelled after other notable moments, including Pazu’s rescue of Sheeta and the pair’s escape along the tracks of a mining railway.

My Neighbour Totoro (1988), meanwhile, spices up the immersion with a box art installation spotlighting the Catbus, a peek-hole experience and photo spot featuring Totoro, and hands-on activities, where visitors can try their hand at folding origami and creating a commemorative thaumatrope.

Moving on to the third level, the galleries boast more original sculptures and the splash art of The Boy and the Heron on its outer wall. Hanging down from the ceiling is Nausicaä on her glider, charting a natural continuation into another flight-based adventure: Porco Rosso (1992). Fighter jets take centrestage here, but enthusiasts can look forward to a recreation of Porco Rosso’s remote island hideout that promises great detail and authenticity.

The next segment, paying tribute to Pom Poko (1994), basks in a retro aesthetic. An old-school television set evokes feelings of nostalgia, with a box art setup offering some interactive fun — simply spin the wheel to see the tanuki, or a Japanese raccoon dog, shapeshift.

The lighthearted tone takes a subtle turn when wandering through the lush forest of Princess Mononoke (1997), aligning with its theme of environmentalism. While Ashitaka and San are the stars of this exhibit, a projection display keeps things fresh with a clever presentation format.

As for Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), visitors can check out a glorious recreation of Gütiokipänjä bakery, where Kiki and her cat Jiji work, and insert themselves into memorable scenes from the animated feature. Much attention has also been poured into showcasing the smaller-scale installations, serving as a nice nod to the source material.

Topping off the World of Studio Ghibli journey is Spirited Away (2001), which takes visitors through the bathhouse, Yubaba’s office, and Chihiro’s train ride with No-Face. An activity corner invites them to unleash their artistic abilities and draw soot sprites introduced in the movie.

Before exiting the exhibition, there will be a retail store where fans can swing by and grab some keepsakes. It offers a wide range of official merchandise, from art books and toy plushes to bags and clear folders, so be prepared to summon your wallets.

As part of the programme, ArtScience Cinema is organising free screenings of two documentaries on the fourth level: Kazuo Oga – Ghibli’s Image Artisan – The Artist Who Made Totoro’s Forest (2007) and The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness (2013), directed by Mami Sunada. A film festival spotlighting several Studio Ghibli films will also be screened in cinemas islandwide.

With 33 years of history and counting, Sonic the Hedgehog is no stranger to collaborations. The iconic Sega mascot has sped from product tie-ins to game appearances, with yet another partnership to add to the list — a limited-time Sonic X Smiggle Collection.

Available islandwide in Singapore, it features a slew of themed offerings for fans of all ages, including backpacks, lunch gear, headphones, key rings, stationery, and more. Most of these come as standalone pieces, with prices ranging from S$3.95 for a tote bag to S$109.95 for a trolley backpack with light-up wheels.

Meanwhile, those who prefer grouped items can check out the Sonic the Hedgehog 3-Piece Junior Bundle (S$152.85), 3-Piece Essential Bundle (S$155.85), 4-Piece School Bundle (S$188.80), and 6-Piece Travel Bundle (S$300.60). These four picks are exclusive to the online store and currently have a 20 percent discount.

To celebrate the launch, Sega and Smiggle will run a special offer from 16 October. Spending S$45 on any purchase in Smiggle stores earns customers a S$5 voucher to spend on Sonic games at participating retail outlets. The blue speedster is also making an appearance at the VivoCity outlet on 12 October at 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm.

More information about the Sonic X Smiggle Collection can be found on the official website. Elsewhere, 2024 is shaping up to be a good year for franchise fans, with the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film, and the Sonic Rumble and Sonic X Shadow Generation games releasing around the same time. Shadow the Hedgehog enthusiasts, in particular, are in luck, as the character will be in the spotlight for the most part.

The long-running legacy of Pokémon has seen countless collaborations over the years, and 7-Eleven certainly isn’t immune to its charm. As part of its latest Shop and Earn Stamps programme, the convenience store chain is launching a new themed collection from 25 September to 19 November in Singapore, starting with 3D Pokémon Builders.

Measuring 5cm tall each, these cardboard figures are constructed out of a kit that includes an instruction sheet and one stamp, used to trade for exclusive items of one’s choice. Customers can obtain a builder set for just S$1 with a purchase of any item, redeem it with 100 yuu points, or purchase any qualifying product to get two packs at S$1.

A total of 30 different designs will be available, each coming in a blind pack. The full range spans 11 elemental types, including Electric, Fire, Water, Grass, and more, with beloved Gen 1 starters, iconic Legendaries such as Mewtwo and Mew, and newer critters like Pawmi and Fidough filling out the roster. For fans with a lucky touch, keep an eye out for five ultra-rare builders with metallic foil accents, featuring Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle and Mewtwo.

Once collected, the builders can be stored in the Poké Ball Collector’s Kit. Measuring 7cm tall and 26cm wide, it also doubles as an organiser for various objects and boasts 30 custom-fit slots. The dual-purpose storage kit retails for S$29.90, requiring 200 yuu points or 10 stamps and an accompanying top-up of S$15.90 for redemption.

To complete the Pokémon trainer look, 7-Eleven is adding Jigglypuff and Bulbasaur-inspired backpacks into the mix, joining the All-Star Backpack design sporting Eevee, other fan-favourites, and the iconic Poké Balls. The former two are equipped with two shoulder straps that can be placed inside to transform the bag into a soft plushie, while the All-Star Backpack ships with adjustable straps and water-resistant material.

Accessories-wise, customers can expect a reversible bucket hat and a cardholder. The 2-in-1 headwear allows for an interchangeable look between a navy blue colourway or a beige alternative showing Pikachu holding hands with Pichu; the latter, meanwhile, comes decked out in a yellow lanyard and Pokéball design (Charizard card not included).

The Pokémon X 7-Eleven collection will run from 25 September to 19 November, with the redemption period ending on 26 November. Here’s a quick look at the mechanics and pricing information for the accessories and backpacks:

Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama is gone too soon, but his legacy lives on. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the series in style, Dragon Ball Daima is set to be a highly-anticipated affair for fans, especially since it’ll be his final anime project.

It’s good news, then, that Crunchyroll will steam the upcoming series with subtitles starting 11 October. Fans outside of Japan can enjoy the broadcast on the same day, which is coming to the United States, Canada, Latin America, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, and Southeast Asia, including Singapore.

The synopsis for Dragon Ball Daima reads, “Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small. What sort of adventures await Goku, Supreme Kai, and the new characters Glorio and Panzy in this unknown world, the ‘Demon Realm’?”

Yoshitaka Yashima (Dragon Ball Super) and Aya Komaki (One Piece) are directing the series, with Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru handling character design. “Jaka Jaan” is the opening theme song, composed by Grammy Award-winning artist Zedd, while singer-songwriter CLIEVY and KEEN provide the vocals. Yukinojo Mori, best known for the highly popular franchise songs “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” and “Limit Break x Survivor” is credited as the lyricist.

Dragon Ball Daima Crunchyroll Oct 2024

Dragon Ball Daima was first announced at New York Comic-Con 2023, offering a glimpse of its fourth-wall-breaking approach. The first episode will air with a 10-minute longer runtime than usual, marking the return of Masako Nozawa as Goku. Other cast members include Yumiko Kobayashi (Crayon Shin-Chan’s Shin-chan, Soul Eater’s Black Star) as Supreme Kai, Koki Uchiyama (My Hero Academia’s Tomura Shigaraki, Horimiya’s Izumi Miyamura) as Glorio, Fairouz Ai (Chainsaw Man’s Power, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean’s Jolyne Kuujou) as Panzy, and more.

Alongside the anime series, fans can also expect Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero on the same day, 11 October. The 3D fighter game will be the first Budokai Tenkaichi entry in more than 15 years, featuring an advertised 164-character roster and content from Dragon Ball Super.

Following a technical presentation on 11 September 2024, Sony revealed its upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro console, with a staggering asking price of S$1,069. This premium amount raises the pertinent question of the games that are coming to the console, and whether it’s worth buying when it launches on 7 November 2024.

Similar to its predecessor, the PlayStation 4 Pro, it allows developers to release enhanced versions of their games that take advantage of the new hardware, including a larger GPU and advanced ray tracing. Non-enhanced games will also benefit from improvements due to the PS5’s “Game Boost” feature. As before, the PS5 Pro will not feature console-exclusive titles.

Here’s the list of first-party titles games set to be enhanced by the PS5 Pro:

  • Gran Turismo 7
    • Improvements: Ray-traced reflections between cars, 4K 60fps, dedicated 8K mode
  • Horizon Forbidden West
    • Improvements: Overall “detail boost”, “improvements to lighting and visual effects”, “Hair and skin improvements in cinematics”
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
    • Improvements: Higher resolution and detail of distant objects
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
    • Improvements: Clearer distant details
  • The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered
    • Improvements: Greater visual detail at 60fps, sharper distant details
  • Demon’s Souls

As for third-party entries, PS5 Pro support will be available on the following:

  • Alan Wake 2
  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • F1 2024
    • Improvements: Ray tracing
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
  • Hogwarts Legacy
    • Improvements: Better ray tracing, “greater variety of reflective surfaces, and further realism in the casting of shadows”
  • The Crew Motorfest
  • The First Descendant

One thing to note, however, is that the titles listed above are just the initial games with confirmed enhancements, and more games are bound to receive PlayStation 5 Pro support after the console is released.
