Geek Review – Monarch: Legacy of Monsters https://geekculture.co/geek-review-monarch-legacy-of-monsters/ Mon, 13 Nov 2023 04:00:00 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=277122

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters elevates the MonsterVerse by blending human drama with monster action.

The post Geek Review – Monarch: Legacy of Monsters appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

The review is based on the first five episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Monsters and mayhem don’t equal mindless entertainment and while it can be difficult to look at the drama revolving around a giant lizard with atomic breath or an enormous ape that wreaks havoc, Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is making a change by focusing on human stories that takes place beyond mindless destruction.

The 10-episode series is the sixth instalment in the current MonsterVerse franchise, and the second television series following Netflix’s animated Skull Island series, bringing a tale around state and family secrets, as well as the monsters that roam our Earth.

In this live-action series, viewers are introduced to two groups of people. The first follows Cate (Anna Sawai), Kentaro (Ren Watabe), May (Kiersey Clemons) and present-day Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell), while the second circles around Keiko (Mari Yamamoto), Bill (Anders Holm) and a young Shaw (Wyatt Russell) back in the 1970s. Yes, you read that right – the older Shaw is played by Kurt Russell, and his younger self is played by Russell’s real-life son, Wyatt. Both are great actors in their own right, and with the family resemblance, it’s not hard to imagine watching the father and son duo play the same character across the decades.

The first, modern group explores a world post-Godzilla’s attacks in San Francisco and Japan, and how a family is being ripped apart and later brought together in the unlikeliest of ways through the super secretive organisation, Monarch. The second group focuses on how Monarch came about and the discovery of Godzilla, as well as other monsters, and naturally, both groups serve different purposes in the story.

Viewers who love monsters and action would prefer the second group’s arc, while viewers who enjoy drama would align with the first. Personally, we enjoy both equally as they provide a balance that makes Monarch: Legacy of Monster action-packed and worthy of emotional investment.

Seeing how these groups exist in different timelines, Monarch: Legacy of Monster flips back and forth between the past and the present ever so frequently throughout one episode. A title card is used to inform viewers which year it is and where the characters are located each time the story flips so viewers will not be confused. After a few episodes, viewers will be able to tell the two storylines apart so the indicators become redundant. Regardless, it is still helpful to have.

If you’re one of those with limited knowledge of Godzilla, and how it’s tied to 2021’s Godzilla vs Kong, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is wonderful in connecting the dots with both the creature and the overall Monsterverse. Likewise, viewers who are particularly fond and passionate about monsters will appreciate that the series gives ample screentime to monsters old and new such as Rodan, Mothra, Mother Longlegs and more.

An episode runs for an average of 40 to 50 minutes, but it definitely feels much shorter. This is likely because there are two concurrent stories evolving within the same episode. Each arc doesn’t dwell on for too long and is constantly moving forward with new discoveries and revelations. Although we’re only five episodes in, we are anticipating that both arcs will converge to a big finale in the remaining five episodes.

Frankly speaking, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is perhaps what fans want out of Netflix’s The Witcher, a show that tackles similar topics of monsters and aims for a non-linear structure. That one stumbled a bit in its storytelling, but studios looking to do the same can benefit from learning how Monarch: Legacy of Monsters operates and replicates a similar approach.

Aside from having interesting human characters, two engaging plots and great pacing, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has incredible CGI. Titans and monsters look good and realistic. The worldbuilding, especially of an advanced Japan with measures in place to protect itself from another Godzilla attack, and the aftermath of San Francisco, look and feel believable too.

In all, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a much-needed addition to ground the universe into something that can be taken seriously when it is put up against other universes out there like Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Harry Potter, Alien and many others. As for new viewers, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is definitely the right place to start and is a worthy watch if monsters are a topic of interest. Who knows, you might even become a fan by the end of it.

Disney Delays ‘Snow White’ Live-Action To 2025, Reveals Reimagined Seven Dwarfs In First Look https://geekculture.co/disney-delays-snow-white-live-action-to-2025-reveals-reimagined-seven-dwarfs-in-first-look/ Mon, 30 Oct 2023 08:31:10 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=276930

Mirror, mirror on the wall, what is becoming of Disney's Snow White?

The post Disney Delays ‘Snow White’ Live-Action To 2025, Reveals Reimagined Seven Dwarfs In First Look appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

Mirror, mirror on the wall, what is becoming of Disney’s Snow White?

Disney announced on Friday that it is delaying the release of its live-action Snow White movie starring Rachel Zegler. The movie is delayed to 21 March 2025, one year after its initial 22 March 2024 date.

The delay comes as the actors’ strike continues to stretch past 100 days. The studio is also shifting Elio to 13 June 2025 as a result. Fans can likely expect more delays from Disney and other major studios if the strike continues for much longer.

To soften the blow from the delay, Disney has released a first-look image from the movie. The first look revealed Zegler in costume as the beloved princess and the seven dwarfs she keeps as her companions.

snow white

The reimagined seven dwarfs are particularly interesting, to say the least. When the studio announced that a Snow White live-action remake was in the works, Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage called it “f***ing backwards”.

“Literally no offence to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. But you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me.” said Dinklage back in January 2022.

“You’re progressive in one way but then you’re still making that f***ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f*** are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox?”

Disney responded to Dinklage’s criticism with a statement that said, “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community.” (via EW).

There were rumours that Disney would have non-dwarf actors playing the dwarfs, although it now appears to be false as the dwarfs appear to be GI-ed. They also look more cartoonish and magical creature-like than human, and appear to be physically diverse.

Disney’s live-action Snow White has been marred with controversy. Conservative fans took issue with the casting of Latina actress Rachel Zegler, claiming that the 22-year-old actress didn’t fit the description of a princess who has “skin as white as snow.” They also criticised Disney for reimagining the tale for this new iteration. Instead of a romantic subplot, Disney’s Snow White will show Snow White becoming the leader her father encouraged her to be.

These controversies even led to the creation of a rival adaptation by Conservative media company The Daily Wire. Their version, titled Snow White and the Evil Queen, will reportedly be a story about “a princess and a prince”. Their version is still expected to air on 22 March 2024.

Daredevil: Born Again's new creative team is slowly assembling.

Daredevil: Born Again‘s new creative team is slowly assembling.

Dario Scardapane will serve as Daredevil: Born Again‘s new showrunner. Scardapane is best known for producing Netflix and Marvel’s The Punisher, a spin-off of the streamer’s Daredevil series.

Despite Scardapane’s involvement, Daredevil: Born Again will not continue the events from the Netflix show. Lead stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will return to their respective roles as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk in the Disney+ series.

daredevil

Meanwhile, Moon Knight and Loki season two directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are boarding the project as directors. Outside of Marvel, Benson and Moorhead made festival circuit hits like The Endless, Spring and Synchronic.

The new creative team comes after former head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman were fired after an early assessment revealed that “the show wasn’t working.” In the previewed episodes, Daredevil: Born Again lacked the action and violence that fans knew the Netflix version for. The creative overhaul is meant to move the show into an entirely new direction.

Hiring a showrunner is part of Marvel’s new approach to making television. Up to this point, the studio had made television in the same way it made movies. Shifting to a more traditional TV model may benefit Marvel and hopefully, its new TV projects.

Daredevil: Born Again will consist of 18 episodes. It is unclear if the 18 episodes will span over one or multiple seasons.

Matt Murdock aka Daredevil is one of Marvel’s most popular characters. He was first created in 1964 by Stan Lee and Bill Everett. In the comics, Matt is a blind lawyer whose childhood chemical accident gave him special abilities. After losing his father, he became a highly skilled martial artist too.

Daredevil has since appeared in various forms of media, including several animated series, video games and a Netflix series that ran for three successful seasons. Most recently, he appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

A surprisingly strong start for the video-game adaptation and horror movie.

The post ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Has Terrifying US$130M Global Haul As Biggest Horror Film Of 2023 appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

Five Nights at Freddy’s, Blumhouse and Universal’s latest horror flick, is off to a strong start. The movie opened at US$130 million at the global box office.

Five Nights at Freddy’s opened domestically with US$78 million, despite debuting on Peacock simultaneously. It has become the biggest horror film to open in 2023, surpassing Scream VI‘s US$44.4 million.

The movie is also the second-biggest opening of all time for a video-game adaptation, behind The Super Mario Bros Movie (US$146.3 million).

Five Nights at Freddy's

Overseas, Five Nights at Freddy’s earned an additional US$52.6 million from 60 markets, bringing its global bow to US$130 million. It surpassed The Nun IIs US$88.1 million.

That’s not all, Five Nights at Freddy’s is now Blumhouse’s biggest opening movie of all time too.

“It’s so fun when it works. Thank you all so much for being patient with us on [Five Nights at Freddy’s]. We wanted to get it just right for the fans,” Blumhouse founder Jason Blum wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “And it’s official. Biggest Blumhouse opening movie of all time.”

Five Nights at Freddy's

Currently, Five Nights at Freddy’s has scored 25 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but has earned an A- on Cinemascore. Geek Culture scored it 6.3 out of 10 – you can read our review here.

Directed by Emma Tammi, Five Night at Freddy’s stars Josh Hutcherson as a washed-up security guard who takes up a job safeguarding a long-shuttered family-themed pizza restaurant. While spending his first night on the job, he realises the late shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through. He’s also trying to maintain sole custody of his 10-year-old sister (Piper Rubio) and prevent her from falling into the clutches of their Aunt Jane (Mary Stuart Masterson).

The movie is rated PG-13. Unfortunately, an R-rated version of the movie will not be happening.

Omnidesk’s New ‘Classic’ Standing Desk Shows How Smaller Is Better https://geekculture.co/omnidesks-new-classic-standing-desk-shows-how-smaller-is-better/ Fri, 27 Oct 2023 07:52:12 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=276841 Omnidesk

A more compact and affordable option for users who live or work in cozier spaces.

The post Omnidesk’s New ‘Classic’ Standing Desk Shows How Smaller Is Better appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>
Omnidesk

Sometimes, bigger is not always better – and the new Classic Standing Desk from Omnidesk Singapore proves just that. The leading workspace brand has expanded its range of standing desks with Classic, a more compact and affordable option for users who live or work in cozier spaces, but still, with the same set of features the brand has pioneered in the space.

Worthy of its name, the Classic Desk is redesigned to feature minimalistic lines and rounded contours that gives its frame a sleek and modern silhouette, as well as a desk top made from powder coated MDF. Available in two timeless colours – black and white – the Classic can fit the aesthetic of any habitat or workspace.

Omnidesk

Aside from being easy on the eyes, the Classic’s main draw is in its compact size. Designed for users who live in cozier spaces or snug officers, the Classic offers a compact width of just 60cm, which is about the width of a regular bath towel, and enough to sit a monitor, keyboard and mouse, while retaining the standard length options of 122cm, 153cm and 183cm.

Omnidesk

Of course, users also have the option to fit the Classic with the regular 76cm width table top if they’d like, and this flexibility allows users to pick the perfect desk for their space and in accordance with what they need.

Long-time lovers of Omnidesk’s Wildwood Collection will also be pleased to know that the compact Wildwood table tops will soon be made available for the Classic. It is currently available in regular size.

The Classic’s steel frame is powered by the brand’s latest electric dual motor and can carry a maximum load of 130kg – which is the same load limit on the other Omnidesk range of desks, so even for a compact desk, it can house your monitor, your keyboard and desk accessories like a calendar or lamp, and maybe a shelf for books and other items comfortably.

As usual, the desk is also equipped with collision technology, which stops it from raising or lowering if there is any resistance, as well as an adjustment speed of 40mm/s – adding to its safety abilities. It also has an adjustable height range of 74cm to 121cm – this is a slightly different height range than the Omnidesk Ascent and Omnidesk Pro’s 60-125cm range.

The next big upgrade seen in the Classic is the launch of a brand new controller – a full touchscreen controller featuring four programmable memory buttons that records the exact height adjustment of your liking, and that of your individual family members who might also share the desk. The new touchscreen controller is also compatible with the Omnidesk Life App, and has previously beloved functions like power saving and child-lock.

Omnidesk

Just like the Omnidesk Ascent, the Classic’s controller is also available in two sleek colours: black and white. The controller also comes with a USB-C Port, allowing you to use it to power gadgets, ensuring that your devices can easily be charged without another power point.

Seeing how the Classic is built for compact spaces, Omnidesk has fitted the Classic with a 990mm long built-in cable management bar and a larger grommet hole that allows for fuss-free cable management. Small spaces can’t afford to have messy wires hanging about as it’ll make the place look less spacious.

Users have the option to upgrade to the larger Advanced Cable Management Bar too if they’re handling more cables and gadgets on the desk, as well as with monitor arms, to keep your displays ‘floating’ and adjustable, to match any height configuration.

The Classic starts from S$649 and is the table of choice for anyone seeking a value-for-money desk in a smaller-sized workspace. For its incredibly compact size, affordable price and sleek design, the Classic proves that smaller can indeed be better. Plus, the compact table top means having less carbon footprint!

Interested customers can view and purchase the Classic in person at Suntec City Mall (#02-328 West Wing, Singapore 038983) or order it online on Omnidesk’s official website.

‘Chucky’ Creator Don Mancini Teases M3GAN Killer Dolls Crossover https://geekculture.co/chucky-creator-don-mancini-teases-m3gan-killer-dolls-crossover/ Fri, 27 Oct 2023 07:44:34 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=276836

Who will win in a showdown? Chucky or M3GAN?

The post ‘Chucky’ Creator Don Mancini Teases M3GAN Killer Dolls Crossover appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

Who is ready for two killer dolls to cross paths? Well, Don Mancini is. The Chucky creator recently teased that his killer doll may come face-to-face with M3GAN in a potential crossover. “I would say, stay tuned,” said Mancini (via Variety).

When M3GAN was released in theatres earlier this year, the two dolls had an online spat.

chucky

On X (previously known as Twitter), M3GAN replied to a comment from a user who said they weren’t going to watch her movie out of loyalty towards Chucky.

Chucky responded by calling himself the ‘Original Gangster’ and flexed his kill count when M3GAN called him a boomer, a viral internet slang phrase used to call out or dismiss people of an older generation.

During M3GAN’s Reddit Ask Me Anything, the doll was asked if she could defeat Chucky and Anabelle from The Conjuring Universe. She replied, “Annabelle never moves, so I wouldn’t have to really lift a finger against her and Chucky is old, so I’d just go right for his pacemaker.”

Being old and not being the only icon of the killer doll horror genre is something the doll struggled with in the latest season of Chucky.

“He really has to contend with legitimate new contenders to the throne like M3GAN and Annabelle,” Mancini said. “He has to deal with that place for himself in the pop culture world and that’s how we really touch the ground with Chucky. We give this off-the-wall character a crisis that has the sting of real pain and real life. But it just makes him angrier and you know what happens when Chucky gets angry.”

Chucky was first introduced in the 1988 Indie film Child’s Play. He later spawned eight more full-length feature films and two short films. Now, Chucky is on his third season on SyFy. Chucky dominated the killer doll horror genre and was an icon for over 26 years until Annabelle came into the picture in 2014. M3GAN joined in 2022.

A crossover is particularly exciting for fans of the genre, though how and when that takes place remains to be seen. M3GAN could potentially make a cameo in future seasons of Chucky, or better yet, the two can have a showdown in a Chucky vs M3GAN movie. Either way, their real-life interaction would be an iconic moment in horror.

Tips and tricks from photographers on the streets!

The post How To Get The Best iPhone 15 Photos In Night Mode & Low Light appeared first on Geek Culture.

]]>

Apple has made photography a lot more accessible for everyday users while allowing professional photographers to flex their abilities with a small, yet powerful camera device like the iPhone 15.

Yes, that also includes low-light photography and taking photos in Night Mode. To get the most of out Apple’s iPhone 15 and its photography features, here are some tips on shooting Night Mode and Low Light on the iPhone 15, according to photographers.

Aik Beng Chia

Artist Aik Beng Chia shot these images at the recent Phuket Vegetarian Festival. These shots were taken during the festival’s culmination, with firecrackers and a procession through the streets of Phuket, on his iPhone 15 Pro Max.

“Night mode on iPhone 15 Pro Max is so much better now, and you can see how the camera was able to capture the sparks from the firecrackers as they explode amidst all the darkness. Details in these pictures are also very well preserved: dark and light are kept distinct and do not bleed into each other,” said Chia.

“I just let my iPhone do its work – and it’s done this very well. All I did was bring the exposure down and lock focus to my intended subject, then point and shoot. iPhone does the rest!”

Darren Soh

Architectural photographer Darren Soh captured a scenery at Kampong Was Hassan in the northern tip of Singapore near Sembawang Park using the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s main wide-angle camera (24mm equivalent) and shot it in Night Mode.

Javan Ng

Photographer Javan Ng shot the 6-metre-tall bronze KAWS’ larger-than-life sculpture. Ng made use of Night Mode and expressed how the iPhone 15 acted as a stabilizer for his less-than-steady hands.

“I composed this shot by framing the sculpture standing side by side with the heritage shophouses and the Pinnacle HDB public housing. I’ve also included a car passing by in the frame,” said Ng.

“It was quite dark and dim at this spot at night. With Night mode, I can capture this image even in such a poorly lit environment. It’s like having a built-in stabilizer, so even if my hand shakes a bit, the photos come out crisp and clear, as if I had the steadiest hand. I don’t need to worry about my photos looking unnatural due to poor lighting. Night mode also maintains the true colours of my subjects.”

Yafiq and Yais Yusman

Creative twins Yafiq and Yais Yusman take joy in playing with compositions and colours when shooting in Night Mode and low light.

“This image was captured using Night mode with the assistance of a 5x zoom lens. The details are mind-blowing, especially since I used Night mode in combination with ProRaw. It provides me with a lot of opportunities to enhance the photo,” said Yafiq.

“This shot was unplanned. I was photographing the sunset in the area and stumbled upon a puddle during blue hour. I carefully positioned my phone close to the puddle to capture a reflection of the building. I’m always fascinated by how water reflections can alter perspective and create an almost perfect symmetry,” said Yais.

“One of my favourite enhancements in Night mode is how the colours turn out. Coupled with the sharper image, it results in a better photo! I enjoy shooting at night a lot more now.”

Yudhi Aristan

iPhone 15 Night Mode Low Light

Photographer Yuhdi Aristan shot the moon on his iPhone 15 Pro Max. Capturing objects in the sky used to be a difficult task but with a simple tap on the screen, the moon shines bright against the building it looms over.

“The light sensor in the new iPhone 15 Pro Max has significantly improved compared to the older model, you can see more details in the shadow and the highlight area. Details around the LED logo and cloud details around the moon can still be clearly seen in this photo,” shared Aristan.

“My tip for night shots is to tap on the darker spot in the image and lock the focus point, then you can adjust the exposure cursor next to the camera focus box to get to the exposure that you intended. Night mode will usually kick in as soon as you tap on a dark spot.”

Zinho De Costa

Geek Culture’s photographer Zinho De Costa took the iPhone 15 Pro for a spin at a Halloween Horror Nights, shooting scare actors in low light and capturing the atmosphere of scare zones using Night Mode.

“Low Light photography gets better with the iPhone 15. I shot these photos with an iPhone 15 Pro during Halloween Horror Nights 11. I lowered the exposure, locked onto the subjects, and let the iPhone 15 Pro do its magic. The details in the make-up and set design are preserved, and light and dark areas in a photo do not cross each other,” said De Costa.

“Patience and luck are key factors in getting these shots, however, the iPhone 15 Pro has worked extremely well in these low light situations.”

Keeping gamers warm every session.

Japanese gaming furniture brand Bauhutte has the solution to keep gamers warm and snug – a Gaming Kotatsu Futon Blanket.

A Kotatsu, for the uninitiated, is a low, wooden table frame covered by a futon or a heavy blanket upon which a tabletop sits. An electric heater is then attached to the underside of the tabletop. The futon traps the heat so when a person sits under the Kotatsu, the lower half of their body remains warm. It is a popular product used in Japan whenever Winter rolls around.

Bauhutte has made their version to suit the needs of a gamer so they can not only keep warm throughout their entire body but have the space to move their limbs and reach for the mice or keyboard too.

For starters, the Gaming Kotatsu Futon Blanket has armholes that users can slip their hands into and cover themselves up all the way to the shoulders. This means users can keep their upper body warm and still be free to move their hands when gaming.

Bauhutte has also added fasteners on the back to prevent the blanket from slipping off shoulders and arms. That’s additional coverage for the back too, keeping gamers warm all around!

Measuring 230cm x 250cm, Bauhutte’s gaming Kotatsu is also said to be one and a half times longer than a normal Kotatsu blanket. This means users can lean back and forth without worry of snagging the blanket.

A grippy, non-slip material is also placed in the centre where the tabletop sits. This ensures that when gamers get too excited and have big physical reactions to the game, they don’t have to worry about any of their hardware slipping off the table.

The product has not been listed on Bauhutte’s official website yet, but it can be purchased on Amazon Japan for 12,800 Yen (approximately S$117). The gaming Kotatsu is just one of Bauhutte’s interesting products for gamers. Others from the brand include a gaming hand massager, a gaming bed and a gaming onesie with ‘toilet mode’.

‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ Director Defends PG-13 Rating, No R-Rated Cut https://geekculture.co/five-nights-at-freddys-director-defends-pg-13-rating-no-r-rated-cut/ Thu, 26 Oct 2023 02:48:58 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=276693

Sorry fans, there will be no violence.

Sorry horror fans, if an R-rated cut of Five Nights At Freddy’s is something you’re hoping for, you can stop.

In an interview with Forbes, director Emma Tammi addressed rumours of an R-rated cut and shared that a PG-13 rating was always the plan so as to be inclusive towards teenage audiences.

“We knew that some of the fan base would want an R-rated version of this film,” said the director. “On the one level, we wanted to be inclusive of the younger audiences and knew we were going to hit the PG-13 rating, but for the audience that also wanted that level of violence, if you will, or at least insinuation of violence, we really wanted to still include elements that felt dark.”

“Of course, there are a lot of dark elements to see in the lore, but in terms of some of the kills and everything, it was just all execution dependent,” she continued. “I would say not to expect an R-rated version on this one. We’re really happy with how the PG-13 tone landed; it felt like the right fit for this particular film. We’re sticking by it.”

This isn’t the first time Tammi has defended the PG-13 rating for Five Nights At Freddy’s. In a separate interview, the director shared that a PG-13 rating was more creative. Tammi also wanted Five Nights At Freddy’s to serve as a good introduction to horror for teenagers.

“Going into production we knew that we wanted to really stick [to] a PG-13 rating for this movie,” the director said via Total Film. “It felt like it was important and really exciting to be able to include a younger audience to come see this movie. But we also, of course, wanted to deliver on the scares and at least the implied violence of a kill, even if you don’t see everything.”

“I personally find it sometimes more fun and creative to figure out the way to show the thing without explicitly showing the thing or without graphically showing the thing,” she added. “It lets your mind go to even darker places sometimes than when you show all the gore in the guts. So, I was really excited about that rating, to be honest.”

Five Nights At Freddy’s is an adaptation of the video game franchise of the same name created by Scott Cawthon. The movie follows a troubled security guard working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. While spending his first night on the job, he realises the late shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.

The movie stars The Hunger Games‘s Josh Hutcherson as security guard Mike Schmidt and Piper Rubio as his 10-year-old sister.

Five Nights At Freddy’s is now out in theatres.

‘Movies Are Too Damn Long’ – Lengthy Runtime Criticised By Director Alexander Payne https://geekculture.co/movies-are-too-damn-long-lengthy-runtime-criticised-by-director-alexander-payne/ Wed, 25 Oct 2023 05:39:58 +0000 https://geekculture.co/?p=276629

Alexander Payne is saying what we're all thinking.

Alexander Payne is saying what we’re all thinking – movies these days are too damn long!

Speaking at the Middleburg Film Festival, the director criticised overly long runtimes.

“You want your movie to be as short as possible,” Payne said (via IndieWire). “There are too many damn long movies these days.”

Payne didn’t list any movies as examples, but his comment came after the opening weekend of Martin Scorsese’s latest flick, Killers of the Flower Moon. While the movie has received positive responses, the only complaint was that the movie is three and a half hours long.

Funnily enough, Payne is also releasing a long movie. Titled The Holdovers, the comedy-drama is about a disliked private school teacher tasked with supervising students who are unable to return home for Christmas. The movie runs for two hours and 13 minutes, including credits.

“It’s still a little long,” Payne said of his film. “We started screening it, and at the first couple festivals I was looking at the program, and it said 133 minutes. I had to call up the studio and go ‘I don’t think it’s 133 minutes.’ I thought we had gotten it down to around 124. ‘No, it’s 133 after the credits roll.’”

the holdovers

The director did note that there are certain exemptions and that there have been movies that can successfully pull off a long runtime.

“If your movie is three and a half hours, at least let it be the shortest possible version of a three and a half hour movie. Like The Godfather Part II [and] Seven Samurai are super tight, three and a half hour movies and they go by like that. So there’s no ipso facto judgment about length.”

Long movie runtimes have become a growing trend in the past year. 2023 movies Oppenheimer and Beau is Afraid, as well as 2022’s The Batman, RRR, Avatar: The Way of Water and Babylon all went over three hours.

Payne’s The Holdovers opens on 27 October.
